Nichelle Played her part well. Nichelle felt that her character was little more than a glorified telephone operator and was going to quit the Star Trek series. None other than Martin Luther King convinced her to stay on saying her character was Important.
In the first 6 Star trek movies, her character was given more substance and Nichelle shinned in those roles. This is Nichelle shining in Star Trek 3, the Search for Spock https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPQvVBaOx2E Rest in peace and warp speed on your final frontier. Edit. This is the interview with EmmYTVLEGENDS.ORG where Nichelle recounts meeting with a Star Trek fan who happened to be Martin Luther King Jr and tells Nichelle How much her role on Star Trek has meant and how important it is to continue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSq_UIuxba8 |

Fun fact: for the first season, she was not on contract as a cast member. This meant she was paid as a casual cast member. It also meant that she was paid more money than some of the contracted cast members.
