Ask for a question about the TWOS installation
In the process of installing TWOS, it appears that "sh5.exe" is being used by another process, and then it is wrong.
My sh5 is the steam version, and then in accordance with the TWOS installation tutorial to the "Silent Hunter 5" the read-only property of the folder, but find a problem, after the read-only property is canceled, then open to read, read-only has been automatically selected by the system, how can this error be eliminated? When I install TWOS, I also shut down uplay and steam. My computer system is windows7, My computer system is already an administrator...and I haven't worked for half a day.:k_confused: Can you ask you for a moment? Be deeply grateful! |
Hmmm. Indeed weird.
Have you checked the task manager for lazy steam-related programs? When I installed via steam, I didn't have this issue. However, i am using win10. I also had deactivated the read-only. |

Have you attempted restarting your pc and then installing twos?
Turn off steam on startup option too. I know, a dumb question. I am trying to remember how it was for me. I did have to reinstall a few times until twos actually worked. |

I did some googling. Maybe this site can help? https://superuser.com/questions/1179...der-in-windows I'd also suggest to get process explorer from a safe site. It is like taskmanager, but shows way more info. And iirc, it also can show you what is accessing what files. My other suggestion would be to temorarily deactivate antivirus. Though I don't think that's still a thing. |

Different anti-virus programs can handle installs differently from each other. Any program that has an exe application maybe treated suspiciously and need to be made an exception of. With TWOS using the Windows Installer none of the downloads to be installed carry a signature. This is then treated suspiciously by the anti-virus program which may decide to make you wait while it is being investigated. On the other hand you may just get a warning and manually have to tell the program the program to run. Peter |

There is this to consider:
Advanced anti-virus programs like Kaspersky Internet Security etc. may throw out alarm if files are changed by another program (like the case of TDW Patch for sh5.exe). In most of these occurences the anti-virus will ask the user to allow or refute, but not all of them: some anti-virus will put the file in quarantine without asking user. This means the player will try to install TWoS and wonder why the game doesn't start or why it starts and shows grafic errors etc. There is no executable anymore or the old NON-PATCHED one only, because anti-virus has taken it away or STOPPED the patch of TDW Patch. TDW Patch has therefore failed! I highly advice to include in the TWoS installation instructions telling the player to DEACTIVATE / PAUSE PROTECTION temporarily the anti-virus during installation. I guess most ranting posts about grafic errors, no text in game, etc. are due because of this problem: sh5.exe has not been patched, but the player believes it because he has followed exactly the instructions..:o |

For more security, also, just tell players to go offline before pausing their anti-virus and to re-activate antivirus once online again. |

In my experience only the exe applications in 3-4-5 and the HSIE in SH3 which is treated as a virus are the only exe that my anti-virus picks up. Other applications like the GFP, OFEV, and JSGME are not blocked. I have just changed my Anti-virus from AVG to BullGuard Premium who are giving 60% off. Peter |
@Peter,
with Kaspersky you have the ability to exit the anti-virus completly which is good if you play offline games that don't need constant scanning of your system. Also the less programs run in the background, the better. I use to go offline and swich off my AV before starting TWoS (or other demanding games) also because of performance. With MP games one should not do this however for security reasons. Other anti-viruses have more or less the same functionality, BUT: To my knowledge, with all of them you can define exclusions of folders or files which then will be NOT scanned at all. In the case of TWoS, if you know that you will install in, for example, C:\games\SH5 (Steam users must know in advance where the files will be installed; it's the '...common\Silent Hunter 5' I think, but not sure), then you create the folder in advance, you make an exception rule in your AV for it, then you install the game in this folder following TWoS instructions. This should work. It's complicated, I know :o At least this would be a solution for those players where their anti-virus will interfere in the background, and maybe they don't even know about! |
