Most of the text is missing

So I recently decided to give the SH series another try but I can never get a good game out of SH3/5.

I'm running the game with TWoS. Patched using GenericPatcher and I have text missing with mostly every crucial part of the game. I can't view my mission as it just says (MissionPatrol.MissionName.MissionDate, etc.). I can't talk to any of the crew members as it just says
1.
2.
3.
4.
etc

The game CTD's on startup if I use ANY compability option including Running as Admin.

Is there anyone who can pinpoint the cause for this? I've thought I narrowed it down to it being Windows 10 but I see alot of people playing SH5 on Windows 10 so I don't know.

I'm using Windows 10, GTX 1080, i5 4690k, 8gb of ram.

1) Installed Silent Hunter V
2) Installed TWoS
3) Changed genericpatch.cfg to match installation directories
4) Patched and restored snapshot
5) Enabled TWoS and TWoS update
6) Deleted main.cfg from Documents
7) Started game and saved in harbor
8) Errors ensue.

Windows 10 should run SH5 ok without having to use a compatibility option.

I purchased it on uPlay so it should be automatically updated and I have the ran updater but it's already at v1.2.0.

edit: I'm going to re-install it.

Hi thryckz
You have a graphic issue which can be caused by a number of things.
Check that you have Direct X 9C working with a new download.
DirectX 9.0C > Download

Check that your gpu settings are correctly setup for SH5
Post #239 Changing The Nvidia GPU Settings

Check that your monitor resolution and the game graphics options are set correctly.

Run Both SH5.exe And Ubisoft Game Launcher Application's As Administrator's

Changing your SH5.exe by going to the compatibility tab and ticking the box to override high DPI scaling behavior is another option.

What's going on in historical missions?
You don't have GUI at all?

I can't run as admin as the game crashes if I tick ANY compatibility option. DirectX 9.0 is installed from the game's directory and also beforehand (I've played alot of games with DX9 as a prerequisite). The game is set to 1920x1080 in both display and game graphics. I'll try runnign it in High DPI.

The exact same as above. I am running the TwoS convoy mission.

Basically, here are the bugs I am getting.
1) Text is missing from crew dialogue's.
2) Viewing missions in the map result in names like MissionName.MissionDate.MissionTime.MissionDescrip tion etc.
3) The map settings button in the top left is ALL in black. I don't know if this is a feature in Real Navigation

I think that in your case, you have to find the way to run your game with administration rights.
Where is your game installed? Did you try to change install location somewhere outside of system folders?

I have windows installed on C and I installed the game to the D drive. More specifically D:\Silent Hunter V.
Running it as admin results in a 0xc000005 CTD which is a access violation error but I can run anything else as admin in my D: drive so I am not sure.

vdr1981 12-15-17 03:27 AM

That shouldn't be happening definitely.
However, I did notice that your problem is quite common between less involved captains who are not familiar with windows OS and it's tricks. The cause is still beyond me since no one cared to share the solution so far...

I'm a game developer who also manages the server farm so it's my job to know windows and its tricks lol. I'll poke around and see what I can find. I have a few computers I can test this out on

That's good to know. And please, don't forget to share your findings.

THEBERBSTER 12-15-17 04:23 AM

Hi t
It sounds like you do not have full administration rights when you login to your computer account.
Might be worth checking your User Account.
Like you I have my game on the D Drive but without any problem.

It's fixed!
The problem was with the installation directory. When I installed in on the second machine running W10 on a partition of the C drive (D drive) it also didn't work. Which is strange since it's an entirely different machine so I started looking around and noticed everything installed directly to the root of the drive has the Read Only attribute assigned so when you remove the attribute it works. This is because SH5 writes to a few files on startup (especially with TWoS).

So, all you have to do is change the Read Only attribute. There may be some people who don't need to do this but in my two instances I needed to do this.

The game will error out with 0xc000005 which is the memory allocated for general access violations. The error it was giving was really what I went off of since it's almost entirely narrowing it down.

Anyway, if the game EVER results in that error when running it as admin. It will 100% be fixed if the admin of the computer removes the read-only attribute from the file. Then the player can play the game and enjoy!

Thanks for the help everyone and sorry for the bother!

My ubisoft account was stolen while typing this and they changed my name and **** so if you have a ubisoft account you most certainly want to enable two-factor authentication. This makes it so ONLY the user who owns your cell phone can login as a second password is required. My password was 16 random letters and numbers so my guess is that Ubisoft had their accounts stolen just now as no one could guess that and I don't have any viruses on my computer as I don't download anything besides steam games and ****

It's a pain to say, but to install and run SH5 flawlessly you need to get rid of uplay...Don't do it and get prepared for some serious campaign shortcommings.
Then, I think TWOS is a must to correct all game-breaking bugs. At least I saw nothing else in these forums for a good setup of the game.
When finished and I'm satisfied, I will make personal notes for not mistaking all these brainstorming steps again :)

Hi,

Im having the same issue. Everything is patched, and i did the GPU thing you mentioned without luck. I downloaded direct x9c with the link you provided but when i try to install it it asks to designate a file path for it. Do you install it in the sh5 folder? or somewhere else?

thanks!
