Which escorts make you go "Oh Crap"
TMO is known for it's vicious escorts and while the average escort does not seem to be as tough in RSRD they can still give you a fit if catch you in shallow waters or calm seas. However, once in a while you run into skilled ones and certain classes of escorts are always a threat, mainly in later war when the better escorts appear. Certain classes definitely force me to be a bit more aware shall we say of escorts as they seem to have better sonar, crews, and plenty of depth charges.Just wondering how others feel about this.
For me, the ones I worry about most are Matsu Class Destroyer Escort-Plenty of depth charges, top rate sonar and radar, they are tough. Akizuki Destroyer(more like a light cruiser with plenty of depth charges) Type C Escort "kaiboikan"(not to be confused with Type C Coastal Defense Vessel) Akikaze Destroyer-Rare in the game but if you've tangled with one, they can lay out an impressive pattern. Otori Torpedo Boat..not sure what makes them tough, perhaps have better sonar etc but even if set to a mediocre crew, they seem to be the A team, if they have more launchers etc would be even more of a threat. Rest of escorts are of course a threat, but don't get as much notice. |
Anything that detects me I go "Oh Crap!"
And the only Akikaze in the game is Bungo Pete...the elite destroyer. :timeout: If the other escorts detect me, there's a good chance that I've messed up. :arrgh!: |

:o Just reading that makes me eye the crash dive key... |
yeah bungo isnt the only place to find the akikaze's ... I have seen them other areas as well but I seriously never do an oh crap at any of them. You just do what you do and hope your better at maneuvering than they are at detecting.

I've never seen Akikaze's outside of Area 7.
Then again, I don't go up near Japan a whole lot. That might be an issue. I really don't like those subchasers that patrol in the harbor while I'm raiding. There's usually just the one in Truk harbor that patrols around at night and pisses me off. |

The Matsu is a mean cookie with all it's K and Y guns, plus double rolloffs.

Bungo Pete is good....besides...torpedoes don't run at 250 feet. :03: You saw Run Silent, Run Deep... :) |
Bungo Pete is a product of TMO, not RSRD. However, RSRD has a generic elite escort that is a mean cookie, think it also has 8 Y guns, but it would be rare if you ran across one.
The hardest time I have with RSRD is 43 and 44, many of the escorts are set to veteran, but I adjusted many to elite. Try fighting 6 Type C's at once in Formosa in shallow water. It's amazing how well they hunt you, coming in from all angles at elite settings. I've even had 3 coming in throwing charges at once |

Along with Bungo Pete there's also that converted US destroyer...I forget what it's called. It's like Patrol Boat 102 or something. :hmmm: |

I ran into it once...only once...and I will definitely steer clear of it if I run into it again. EDIT: That wasn't even my worst experience with depth charges! The worst experience came from a lucky shot from a shore battery and a subchaser. |
Well be default the only Akikaze in TMO(and RSRD far as I know) is Bungo Pete in Area 7.I have added a lot of traffic and put 4 or 5 of them in various areas, mostly going off some research I did, took a little liberty, few having a 50/50 chance ending up in some convoys as an escort.
Patrol Boat 102(from TMO) is pretty tough.PB 102 from RSRD(different models, the RSRD model incorrectly has 3 stacks not 4 as the real PB 102 did) but never given me as much of a fit.I added Patrol Boat 102 and a Type C escort to Dasol Bay in August 1944, its the group USS Harder attacked( and was sunk by) , they are tough.I have only engaged them once, I actually sunk Patrol Boat 102 with a spread of mark 14's from 1,000 yards, one hit her stern, set off catastrophic chain explosion from her depth charges. The Type C Escort(supposed to be CD-22 which is credited with destroying Harder) sank me.Elite escorts with plenty of depth charges are tough. |

I was transiting the mighty Pacific Ocean until I was in one of the straits (can't remember which, it was in the South Pacific). It was around 0200 so i decided so run at decks awash through the strait. At 0300 I surfaced completely and ran for a little bit until suddenly, my boat was hit in the bow by a shell from a shore battery some ways off. I quickly dived to radar depth to check the area....and then it started.... I was sinking by the bow. :nope: SURFACE! Next, I changed speed to ahead standard to keep from sinking. I was just almost done with pumping water out of the bow and diving back to radar depth when sonar reports a warship short range, moving fast, closing! $%#($*%&#$(! Well...I was able to make it to a tolerable periscope depth. I couldn't see the subchaser....my boat was still at a bit of an angle so when I face the periscope rearward i'm looking down at the water. It was off in one of my blind spots. So I dived, not knowing how close it was only to have depth charges drop not 10 minutes later. I'm still running at ahead two thirds to keep a normal angle. I still had flooding and the angle was getting bad again. I was sticking out of the water at this point. Depth Charges Galore! More flooding, more damage, more sinking. Now, I was at like 70 degrees up angle and I was running at ahead flank to stay up. I knew then, I had to surface. I surface and managed to actually kill the thing with my deck gun! (That big gun on the Gar class is awesome) And I started to move away. Then, I sank. Right there on the surface. Sank like a rock. I was making something like 45 knots when I died from sinking so fast. :dead: There's the short version of what happened in that patrol. |
I wish I could say I have more experience splashing around in the Pacific... but in the other ocean...
...just seeing a Black Swan makes me feel cold and wet every time. Cheers from the ETO.:salute: Sorry to interrupt. |
