Actual Kaibokans for modding.
For the last month, I have been in search of a realistic looking Kaibokan for my SH4 v1.4 game. When I added TMO 1.7.6 and saw a Kaibokan listed as one of the add-on ships, I found out it was just a re-flagged American Evarts DE, although I have to admit there is enough of a resemblence for it to be better than none at all. I also saw a Kaibokan that was in another mod that left a lot to be desired, however I am the LAST person to criticize anyone else's attempts at creating a Kaibokan, realistic looking or not. At least they tried. Since I am absolutely no good at modding, I decided to provide info and specs for those that are. I have found two good sources of info on actual Kaibokans. Here is a page that shows what the most common look of a Kaibokan: www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,25065.0.html. I also am adding a Wikipedia page that lists all six types of Kaibokans used by the IJN: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaibokan. Hopefully, this info will help anyone creating / modding ships for SH4 1.4 and 1.5. Good luck!

Yes, that is the best I've seen so far. It looks like one of the earlier classes of Kaibokan, as it has just six YGuns. Probably SHIMUSU or ETOROFU class. Very good job!

Is there a downloadable mod of your kaibokan tater, or are you keeping that little beauty to yourself.:)
|
It's in RSRD. There are multiples, and the CD-C and CD-D ties are also different. The radars on all escorts change over time as well (both in behavior, and appearance). The C/D types have more throwers, too, I just don't have a pic handy.

Thank you for the info tater, I have RSRDC and the patch and will get round to it again when the GFO campaign is done.

Looks nice Tater. |
RSRD has the kaibokans I did (early, then both C and D types), variants of the subchasers (different radars, etc visible on the masts). It also has the moving radars and gun directors for the larger ships (watch Yamato in RSRD if you ever see her, the radar sweeps, and if you surface, the gun director will point at you :) ). I think I bashed a mats DE as well. It;s been several years, lol.

Thats not an Kaibokan but thats an japanese latewar DD, the Matsu Class.
Ive build it for FOTRS. http://www.aotd-flottille.de/FOTRS/V...riJP/Matsu.jpg Regards Maddy |
I know what a Matsu is :)
The only pic I have is an early in-progress shot (again, this is from maybe 2006 or 2007, lol) http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o...SH4/matsu1.jpg |
Iam back again,

Nice Maddy. I have not played SH4 for quite sometime. Seriously, your continued work has me wanting to play again. I'm waiting for 2.0. It will be a new game for me!
Appreciate the efforts! :yeah: |

If you're trying to get me interested in SH4 again... it's working.

I was looking at the details on the other forum and was wondering about the depth charge throwers/projectors. Does anyone know what the differences are in the launchers and depth charges? |
My IJN mod that is folded into RSRDC has the different japanese DCs as well as SH4 can deal with them. In reality, they should have just a few possible depth settings, but that doesn't work in SH4.
I did change the thrower ranges and DC explosive level to match the amount of explosives. Never bothered with the ASW mortar, as far as I know they were entirely useless anyway. |

So, I assume the type 3 was the later (better?) model. Was the advantage a farther throw or a heavier charge? Quote:
Rgr that. |
Type 95, then Type 2 (like the "zero" aircraft, the number is the japanese calendar year).
Late type 95s had an extra depth setting (it added a 90m setting to the extant 30m and 60m). The 95 had a 100kg charge and fell at 1.9m/s. The type 2 had a few charge versions, with the smallest at 105kg, and the largest (most common) at 162kg. They fell at 3m/s. The throwers are tricky. They use a charge to blast out the arbors, and the range depended on single side throws (all the blast shooting 1 charge), or a double. No such control in SH4. Single throws had a range of 105m, and doubles were 75. Used 75. That's for a type 95, at a total weight of less than the explosive weight of the type 2, so the latter got smaller patterns. |
