I suspect the Jerries want the UK taxpayer to help out if their taxpayers are having to do so. Will it work? Depends on how bad things get IMHO. Everyone will be paying something in this mess. Except the ones with the pursestrings. They'll make sure they are looked after.

Reportedly in the interest of improving relations the Germans donated some shrubs for Buckingham Palace. Pictured below is one of the shrubs in question:
