SH IV purchase
Guys I just purchased SH IV gold edition from Amazon. What else will I need to run this game with as few bugs as possible? Will I need mods? Can someone step me throught the process? As I mentioned in an earlier post I have SH III Gray Wolves Gold and love it. I would like to get a good PAC sub sim that is stable and relatively bug free. Can someone please let me know what I should do next after recieving order from amazon???
John Martino Lancaster PA PS It took me 5-6 years to feel really good about SH III and do not exspect perfection from SH IV |
Start with the Skipper's Bag of Tricks sticky thread.
Lancaster, PA, eh? I didn't think Amish ate Hershey Bars and used the computer?:D |
Hey, John, I just cleared out my mods and loaded and ran TMO with the latest TMO patch (those two uploads only). It's running sweet so far but I just got on station and haven't encountered the enemy, yet. Immersion great, so far.
Looks like you'll be sent off, at Pearl, with a Navy band on the dock and some overweight officers from various branches ogling your sub as it heads out. I elected to command a Gato mid 42 Pacific outa Pearl and there's still some bad wreckage in port. The voice files are great and the crew is rendered well. The sub handles superbly and I anticipate nail-biting action once I intercept and reach solution. (It's feels like a sub movie and the Fleet Boat manual rolled into one.) |
Hey Johnlax, I think you are messing things up. There are several editions to SH4, which would be:
a) 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 or 1.4: and you may have bougt any of them, or bought one and upgraded it with dowloadable 'patches'. That is not clear at this point. b) 1.5. This is what you get when you install 'u-boat missions' over any of the previous. It is bought separately, and installed separately too. Sometimes it is bought in a bundle pack. Now consider this: 1 - When you say you bought 'sh4 gold', it probably means you bougth 1.4 + 1.5 (u-boat missions) in a bundle (so, two installations), right? At least, I thing today 'gold' means that, previoulsy it might have meant something else. This is the first thing you must check. Do you or do you not have u-boat missions? It is not installed automaticaly with "1.etc". 2 - As soon as you understand what stock version you have, you will know if you have 1.4 (no 'u-boat missions') or 1.5 (yeah, u-boat missions!!!). 3 - Then AND ONLY THEN you can star thinking about supermods, which are designed for this or that version (most of them for 1.5). |
Silent Hunter Gold Edition (Version 1.5) is the latest version and needs no additional patches. You're ready to start modding to your heart's content. Mods are a personal preference, thus mine is obviously biased in suggesting TMO, but that's my favorite. Good luck hunting. We can always use another boat in the Pacific.

Ver question
Guys I am banking on the purchase of 1.5 Gold as advertized on Amazon that being said they called it Gold and talked about containing u-boats So I hope I am on the correct track.

Direct to drive sells it as SH4 (not sure which variant) plus the U-boat upgrade. Had to make a second purchase through them to get it up to 1.5 because I didn't buy it as 'Gold' off the bat. At 10.00 a pop it was still worth it. It did require my installing the U-Boat patch I bought from them as well as the stock game. Not sure why they called it gold and they sold it as the two-piece. But it works like a charm. TMOing it now and it's just what the doctor ordered.

Damn it Steve, why do you have to be such a bore all the time? Is retirement an excuse to be so picky about every single split-hair detail?
You forget that many people from dozens of diferent countries post comments here. Distribution details may be different from country to country. I repeat, they MAY be, so there is no harm asking. I was just trying to see what "poing-something" he had and if no mistake was being made. Damn, I say. Damn. :damn: If your intention is to be helpful or handy, try being polite at the same time, or count me out on treating you with reciprocity in the future. |
I'm sorry. I would, however, like to know exactly how I was impolite. I wasn't trying to be picky - I just thought you were mistaken. Was I wrong?
Whatever the case may be, I apologize. |

You were wrong about me being mistaken, but that is not quite the issue. Try to remember that most people posting here are actually trying to be helpful, but whithin their limitations which may be of several origins - language, for instance. Many people posting here are from non-english countries, as I am for instance, thus sometimes failing to be clear all the time (though not reaching 'wed true' heigths!). What snaped me is that we all kinda expect contributive remarks - dialog - instead of split-hairish, picky, tiring remarks about tiny little things where something was slightly wrong or something like that. I think the word here is 'comprehension', without which, a forum ceases to be a fulfiling dialog and becomes a battle on who has the most detailed, impressive, uncontestable general knowlege about everyting - and specially so, when a counter-post seems to have a "ha! got you in a mistake" kind of feeling (something rather usual in this forum, and by the way, a mistake we all make now and then). Dont get me wrong, Steve, I am not quite acusing you of being all that. Well, just in a few ocasions.... :-? ... you did that in your post below and I didn't like it. I was trying to help the guy, I admit that maybe in a too professoral manner, but then you came out of the blue, with the "sword of righteousness" in your hands. Sometimes that is not likeable, I think you can understand that. You have no way of knowing what versions of the game were released all over the world. Actually neither had I, but was that a reason for not asking? The "sword of righteousness" hurts. It is quite a responsability, not to draw it in every single opportunity - a thing that, as I've seen, you do tend to do a bit often. And if I am saying this, is because I enjoy our interaction in this forum, and not to simply be a prick. Anyway, I'm sorry too, Steve. Sorry for snaping. Guess I was a bit on edge at that time. I take back what I said. ;) |
Fewer paragraphs. ;) (Just kidding.)
I'm willing to bet Steve knows that this community is comprised of several talented contributing members all over the world, all of which are well-meaning, for the most part - several of which are prone to joking and teasing in-between or while doing so. I, personally, appreciate each and every member of SubSim (so far). The habit I've attained, over the years, of posting verbosely actually came about from communicating across language barriers and gaps online. It's a couple of fine lines between not enough information, too much information and just the right amount of information. That doesn't prevent people from responding to perceptions I didn't type at all but it does seem to reduce the incidences of complete non-communication between me and those I wish to communicate with (and visa-versa). :DL (Oh great, now I'm semen.) |
