back to SH3

After not playing for a few years I found a budget SH3 on base for 9.99$ so I said what the hell. I am glad that I did. I forgot how fun it is. I have been able to get some great add-ons through the site and I greatly appreciate it. I remember a mod that made the ports more "alive" ie.... more ships in port, patrol planes, attacks happening. Can anyone direct me to that in the community?

SH3 is helping me kill time here in Kabul Afghanistan and I really appreciate the modders that made a great game just as close to perfect as it can be.

Welcome aboard!

To liven up the harbors I would suggest checking out the various supermods. I use GWX3 but I would expect the others like NYGM and WAC add something in that respect as well. There are stickied threads for them in the Mods Workshop Forum.

GWX
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=102096

WAC
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=128050

NYGM
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=139231

Any one of them should add tons more fun to your game. :yeah:

Welcome to SubSim Scott http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...es/welcome.gif

If GWX becomes your choice of super mod I would advise you to get the exe file plus the 7 bin files from the FF link above my sig.

If you also decide to use the exceptional SH3 Commander the GWX CFG file for that can also be found using my FF link.

Is this (http://subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=164252) what you're looking for? It includes a lot of animated shore traffic, lots of boats, sub pens, etc. etc. etc.

It is enabled on top of the GWX super-mod, or comes already included in the War Aces Campaign super mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=87436). I believe it's also included in the Living Silent Hunter Super-mod mentioned above.

Welcome and take care.

Thank you for all the replies guys. I have tried to get the GWX and the LSH but our net here doesn't like the file sites. About the only thing I can get from (and it isn't always) is Mediafire. I have been downloading smaller add-ons locally from sites and forums though. I would love to get one of the super mods, just a matter of finding them someplace I can get them.

I am on my first patrol (only 35% realism) in a Type II and got a coastal merchant off the east coast of England. I remember why I loved this simulation so much, the anticipation, the build-up to an attack, the tunnel vision of getting the kill that allowed a plane to come in behind me (ouch)

Thank you for making me feel so welcome. I actually have SH4 here with me too that I bought in Dubai, but haven't loaded it. I think I will stick with SH3 for awhile with it's outstanding community.

I always stay safe here. I have learned lots of lessons about staying alive after being in the warzone since January 04 working with the military.

Glad I expected teething problems with the mods.

GWX should also be around as a torrent.

I uploaded the torrent file to my personal webpage:

http://members.home.nl/rico.v.jansen...orrent.torrent
(I plucked it right from Jimbuna's Filefront page)

I noticed there were about 20 peers, so you should get plenty of download speed.

Helluva time to realize that my Type II doesnt have a flak gun............

thank you for posting the torrent, but we can't get torrents here. so far im sticking with the smaller downloads and having fun. i got one big one, the merchant mod that has the many many different types of ships and they look great too. I have a question. Are the "stock game" torpedoes doing correct damage? I had to use 3 to sink a 3500 ton ship and 2 didn't sink a 3250 ton ship. Or should I download a torpedo mod?

You shouldn't need more than one for a ship that size. Placement is obviously an important factor as is listening for the crew cheer shortly after impact. If you hear the cheer the ship is doomed.

It then becomes only a matter of staying in the vicinity and being patient until the fire and flooding take her down. Or, if you're in a hurry, (and the coast is clear), you can always surface and finish her off with a few rounds from the deck gun. :sunny:

i did not know this, I thought the cheer meant that i hit the ship.. This will save me a lot of torpedoes because i been firing them until it sinks.. now when you said that i have to stay in the vicinity, does that mean if i go to far the ship won't sink?

Ships don't sink instantly even after being hit, so continuing to fire after the first hit can be a waste of ammo. If you have selected the option for realistic sinking times it will take even longer for a damaged ship to register enough cumulative damage to be considered a kill.

Some ships do take more than one eel to sustain enough damage, so you'll just have to use your judgment - which you'll acquire through playing. A lot of things factor into it - where the torpedo hits, whether or not it was set for impact or magnetic, the weather, etc.

But generally if you get one or two hits and it's safe to hang around and see what happens, just be patient. I've waited an hour or more (in game time, altho I might've shortened it a bit with time compression) for a ship to sink after one hit, but eventually it sank.

You'll know the game has counted the ship as sunk when you get a message from your crew saying "She's going down!" Until you get that message, you must stay within contact range of the vessel. Once you're out of range, the ship "disappears" from the SH3 world and the game will never credit you with a kill even if it would've eventually gone down had you stayed around. But once you get the "She's going down!" message you are safe to leave even if the ship is still partially afloat.
