Gabrielle Giffords: First photos of shot congresswoman

US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has released the first pictures of herself since she was shot in the head in January.

Two pictures appeared on her Facebook page.

Ms Giffords, 41, was seriously injured during a shooting spree by a gunman in Tucson, Arizona, that killed six people and wounded 13 others.

She is being treated at a clinic in Houston, Texas. Doctors say she has been recovering well.

In an interview with The Arizona Republic published on Thursday, Ms Giffords' Chief of Staff Pia Carusone said she still had only limited speaking ability.

But Ms Carusone told the Associated Press news agency on Saturday that she could be released from the rehabilitation clinic in the coming weeks.

In one of the pictures released on Sunday, Ms Giffords is smiling at the camera.

According to my news source she's still finding it difficult to talk and is heavily reliant on hand signs.

REALLY!!? :o

Freiwillige 06-13-11 06:25 PM

He will still be locked up for life just in a mental ward instead of a prison. No execution either:nope:

But I do believe he is mentally screwed up. He has a history going back to over a year with documented problems at his school and by acquaintance testimony. He started talking allot of nonsensical gibberish about money and government long before the shooting.

I still think they should fry him mental or not, but again just because he's a nutter doesn't mean he deserves sympathy. Put him out and move on.

Well that has not been decided yet. He as a court appearance on September, 2011 where it will be decided whether he is competent to stand trial in federal court.

What will be interesting is if Arizona can make a case for concurrent jurisdiction. It might be possible to Loughner to be considered competent to stand trial in state court. That would be interesting.

In any case, don't think that because he will rot in a mental institution that he will have an easy life.

He was found incompetent to stand trial. That trial was over May 25th sir.

I have not agreed so completely with a statement in a long time. Yeah, he's nuts, you have to be to do what he did. He needs to be put down like a rabid dog, not locked in a hospital.

Gerald 06-14-11 03:19 AM

So he will be able to sit in a closed psychiatric ward in the prison, the rest of his life!

That is correct, but there will be another hearing on 21 Sep 11 to see if, after going treatment, he remains incompetent. If he responds to treatment, he may still go on trial.

I see. This I did not know. I thought perhaps once noted as a loon by the courts you are loon status from then on. I believe he will still be found as incompetent.

Gerald 06-16-11 08:12 AM

There are clear signs, that he will maintain the "status" at any rate until further notice.
