Full hull repairs at resupply ships?
After a close call with some wasserbombes down in the Gibraltar straits in which I picked up around 30% damage on my hull, I decided to head for the Thalia in Cadiz ('41) for a much needed resupply.
Upon leaving the port I noticed that my hull integrity had been restored to 100%. Is this normal? Full hull repairs at resupply ships? |
If I had to guess that would not be possible in reality. As far as I understand, the game treats a supply ship like any land base :)
|
Correct, the resupply ships were added into the game as additional bases, since IIRC this was the only way to mod them in. Consequently when you dock at one the games "sees" it as you ending your patrol at some base other than your home base. So you get another full complement of fuel and ammo, and any necessary repairs to the boat are made.

Quite right that Frau here say, but you can not do upgrades of the boat, existing platforms such as Flakguns or sonar.

Well thats excellent news for me then as I love hanging around the Straits of Gibraltar, and the Thalia's only a couple of hundred kms away!:yeah:
Cheers all. |
Yup, docking at supply ships gives you a fully-repaired sub, a full default torpedo loadout, and a full supply of fuel.
You cannot issue medals or skills at supply ships, and you will lose any that you earned even when you do finally go home. You cannot choose your torpedo loadout from a supply ship. You cannot make crew changes while at a supply ship. Steve |

Just one small point not mentioned...you will incur an extra day at the supply ship for every % point of damage your boat has taken.

It might be perfectly safe; I just don't mess with stuff like that after the patrol has kicked in. |

With or without Commander, though, you still get those extra days for hull damage. :stare: It can be edited out by tinkering with career files in between patrols but I haven't done it for a while. |

So I guess the moral of the story is - don't dent your boat. :D |

That's why I don't like the extra DiB for hull damage in that situation. It's not a question of whether or not some repairs could be made, it's a question of how lengthy a stay there is realistic. 1-2 days, yes; 2-3 weeks, no. |
I agree. A supply ship in a neutral port shouldn't even be able to give you more than one or two torpedoes. A full load of fuel and some food is the best they should be able to do. A few parts to let you make some of your own repairs might be possible.
A complete refit should only be done in a fully supplied naval base with a drydock. The whole resupply thing was never done right by the devs, and the modders could only do so much with what they were given. |

My only concern is how unrealistic it would be for a supply ship to complete all repairs in a ridiculously short period of time. As for the other side of the coin, (namely spending an unrealistic amount of time along side), I can totally see your point. Perhaps Steve is correct in suggesting that full repairs should never have been implemented by the devs. Better to complete makeshift repairs (on a timely basis) and then limp home for added drama. |
