Earth hour

Anyone know what the net effect on the CO_2 emissions earth hour has?

I found some statements saying there is a net negative effect due to power grid fluctuations(loss off efficiency) and buring of candles, they did not seem very well substantiated.

Does anyone have any good sources?

Can someone enlighten me as to what Earth "hour" is? Or is this a Global Warming thing?

It was warm outside my house today. :D

Basically this stupid idea of having everyone turning off their lights and electronic devices for a day in some vain attempt to save the environment. (I think, I don't actually care enough to look it up)

Its warm out here in Texas as well, lots of counties are already instating burn bans, and it isn't even summer yet.

Three cheers for the sweltering Texas summer to come!

I thought the turning the lights out thing was for Green Day or something like that (not the band). I remember during football season they did something like this.

Like I could afford lights in the first place.

LOL. :har:

I have a big house, and lots of lights... so I'm supposed to turn all of them on tonight, is that it?

The net effect strikes me as virtually zero unless you have a generator for power since the power plants won't stop burning fuel during this "earth hour" nonsense.

STEED 03-26-11 03:30 PM

its 8:30pm and I got my lights on and fan and PC and...

Do I give a hoot? Not me. ;)

Skybird 03-26-11 05:52 PM

I'm searching for the blue flower this night, and for doing so I need more light, not less, damn it!

North Korea celebrates Earth Hour, every hour, every day, every week, every month of every year.

Now that's committment. :yep:

I did lights out tonight and it was fun. The other drivers didn't appreciate it so much however.

TorpX 03-27-11 11:45 AM

My dad and I used to do this kind of thing years ago. We called it "camping", and it was fun (for a while). But after three days we were happy to go home again. :yep:

Hmmm.....I can understand that

Earth hour does nothing to solve any environmental problem; whether you believe those problems real or imagined.

The funny thing is this that isn't this Earth Hour "lights out" movement the sort of feel-good gesture which only results in some minor population increase in 9 months time? Thereby putting more humans on the earth and creating a greater demand for energy and resources.

It does give a whole new meaning to the term "feel-good gesture" though. :O:

kranz 03-27-11 03:47 PM

when I see US fatasses in their SUVs and Jeeps with 5l+ engines what I do during the Earth Hour is turning my empty oven on and switching on water in the washbasin for 15 minutes.

TarJak 03-27-11 05:15 PM

A seriously pointless gesture designed by an advertising company here in Australia to make people feel like they are doing something when nothing they can do will make the slightest bit of difference. See the Peter Drucker quote in my sig for futher details...
