AVP, Borderlands, or warband?

Soo.. im in between games sorta. ME2 and Dragons age have kept me busy for awhile, but how many times can you rewatch the same movie? (which is what bioware games ultimately are.. interactive movies)

L4D1 and 2 are fun in a decent group, but will become old hat to me again before too long. Amnesia is creepy (IE fun), but i see very little replay value in it. (pretty good for 20 bucks none the less).

Right now, I find myself wanting
- action. (bit tired of point and click ala dragons age)
- building something.. anything. Levels, items, rpgish like mechanics perhaps?
- non linear
- generally want to blow **** up and have the crap scared outta me too.
- semi decent graphics

All that is a hard for any one game to pin down i'd think.

So, been digging around, and the only three games that stick out in my mind are:
- the new AVP
- Borderlands
- Mount and blade: warband.

Of the three, which has the most longevity and replay value? WHich would you choose and why?

PS...... im bored.:O:

Dowly 10-11-10 03:51 PM

Warband has the most replay value, also I like the concept. :hmmm: :yep:

How so? I saw some gameplay clips of it, but it looked like just short skirmish's. What genre does it fall into really? Alot of titles seem to sit between two different genre's these days.

edit: More specificaly, what do you do in between fights?

What about a 4th choice - You might like R.U.S.E full game is out, demo was out few months back.

Haven't played the game but it looks massive - RTS

Quote:

R.U.S.E. is a one-of-a-kind real-time strategy game that allows players to bluff their enemies to lead their nation to victory, controlling the action using views that range seamlessly from the heart of the battlefield to the full theatre of war.
R.u.s.e gameplay

I'm REALLY bad at explaining things, so you better go read a review or two to see what it's all about. :DL

EDIT: DO NOT TOUCH R.U.S.E.

Yeah i was just doing that. I have to ask (sorry), just a couple of things.

1.) Is it sandbox?
2.) Do you build a character?
3.) some of it sounds a bit like a total war game, like rome total war. Any simulartiies there?
4.) Is most of the game played from a map, or in 3d?

As to RUSE. I watched the trailer last night. It lost my interest the instant the ubisoft logo flashed on the screen. Probably chained with their online DRM i'll bet. (edit: oh yeah, and a crapload of bugs)

1.) Yes, you have one world where you can move freely on the strategy map (point somewhere and you see your guy running there from bird's eye view thingy)
2.) Yup, the usual RPG stuff, choose from what kind of background you come from etc.
3.) Yes, it's almost like TW games, except during the fights you go right into the midst of it controlling yourself on the battlefield.
4.) Battles and when visiting castles & cities are from 1st/3rd person view, moving outside happens on a 3D map I described on point 1.

It's extremely arcady and suffers from idiotic things like AT guns only being able to shoot armored targets etc.

Ducimus 10-11-10 04:41 PM

:hmmm: Warband sounds alot like Rome TW then. Just a bit more... interactive on a personal level i guess.

So what would be the 2nd runner up then? I'm guessing AVP. Borderlands.... aside from the cel shading (WHY?!), sounds alot like Farcry 2 to me, and probably repeditive after awhile?

edit: BTW dowly, your comments on AvP compared to L4D is what got me started on this kick. lol.

Hehe, aye figured as much when I saw you asking around in the AvP thread. :03:

Tho, I was talking about AvP2 in the L4D thread. The MP is pretty much the same in AvP3, but with very few good maps and it has the match making BS that seems to be the trend in games these days. :shifty:

Raptor1 10-11-10 05:03 PM

I played RUSE back when it was in closed beta, it sucked very much, as I've said a few times around here.

I haven't played Borderlands, but I can say that Warband is awesome. It also has a ton of replay value and it's extremely moddable.

Ducimus 10-11-10 05:05 PM

There's an AVP3??!

http://www.hollow-hill.com/sabina/images/aw-jeez.jpg

So im guessing "AvP Classic" is what i played. Early 2000 i think. Quake 2 engine i think it was. I know theres a newer AVP. Im guessing that one is AVP2?

The "few good maps" bit, i think i saw on a video review. Since you just said the same thing, thats making me lose interest already.

Now, id be lying if i said Borderlands still doesn't get my interest, despite misgivings. Espeically since its a FPS & RPG. I seem to be a sucker for those. I figure the solo play will probably become dull, but how's the multi on steam? As you probably already figured out, i really like co op multiplayer against a tough ass AI that will WTF PWN you if you don't have your teamwork together. Probably only reason why L4D1 and 2 remains on my hard drive. :rotfl2:

edit: BTW, i had a blast yesterday in L4D2. I love that AK . Get one of those with a laser sight, and i think its the best AR in the game.

Well, it's called just AvP or AvP 2010, that'd be #3. The thread you asked around in was for that game.

Yes, AvP Classic is AvP1, think it was released in '99, AvP2 came shortly after in 2001.

Aye, used the AK today as we played with Raptor, the sound makes it feel accurate in some weird way. Great weapon.

Ducimus 10-11-10 05:30 PM

Just FYI, i just read that the GOTY edition of borderlands is due out tommrrow. I might wait and see if steam has a sale on that or not. Otherwise, i might get Warband.

I was pretty impressed with the video out earlier this year, yeah but I should of known better. :haha:

The heck? Warband is almost nothing like the total war series.

Warband is an RPG sandbox game, with sorta realistic combat. You can recruit people to form armies which you can loosely control, join a kingdom and gain a fief to support your armies, do quests, trade, and what ever the heck else you want. It also has limited skirmish type multiplayer if I recall.

Simplest thing is just to download it from taleworlds.com and I think you can play to level 5 to get a feel of it for free.

As for AvP from playing it at my friends house i don't think it has much replay value to speak of.

Borderlands is fun but rather repetitive after a while. Best played with friends though, and not pickup groups.

If you want a single player game, Just Cause 2 has a ton of stuff to do (its a huge sandbox world) and you can do lots of crazy things in it, but its not realistic.

Anyhow some reviews for the last 3 from ZP

Even though I only own the Original Mount and Blade, I'd suggest Warband.

The mods for the original mount and blade ranged from Feudal Japan, to Star Wars, to the Wild West. Modding greatly improves the replayability of this game.

Combat is realistic, and fun.

In fact I feel like buying Warband now. :haha:

+1 for Just Cause 2, actually think it's the most fun I've ever had on a game, ever, seriously. It's awesome.

For the record: it isn't crippled by OSP. Ubi didn't even make it, just publishing, but obviously it's their logo you'll see first. They're trying very hard to make it look like they made it. :nope:

Apart from that, yeah, RUSE sucks imho.

I think Warband would be the best choice from the options I've seen so far. Don't ask me why, it just is. :DL
