[REQ] Less blinding Searchlight

Its truly annoying. its brighter then if the dam sun was at your door. i cant even see the ship. its freaking blinding. It needs a SERIOUS tone down.

p.S: sorry if it already exists, and if it does can you point it out. Danke.

You mean the ship mounted search lights that in RL illuminated targets miles away?

If start mssing with them again to improve realism you'll really not like them :)

tater 09-18-10 09:23 PM

USS Quincy illuminated by IJN searchlights:

Given that the lights had long ranges, and were 110cm in diameter, it is clear Quincy is at some distance from her attackers.

USN ships were illuminated at 7,000 yards during that engagement.

Another thing to consider too (and be thankful it's not in the game) is that your eyes would be night adjusted, and when that light hits your scope you would be blinded, at least for a short time while your eyes adjusted back to their night vision.

Ive always wondered if your scope reflected that light? does it?
I just assumed it did and try and lower the scope before im zapped by the light.

As said before, shipboard searchlights were designed to light up the enemy at long range, bright enough to identify the ship and shoot at it.

You're not supposed to be able to see when you've been lit up - you're supposed to dive.

CaptainMattJ. 09-19-10 12:07 PM

well first, i dont care about realism in this topic.

second, im using the Yamato playable ship. I Cant see ANYTHING worth a dam. I went to midway and sunk everything there. Every ship was a Chore to shoot, because of those damned searchlights. This is a sim, but its Meant to be played at a personal level. I honestly dont care about realism in respects to those verdamt searchlights.

tater 09-19-10 12:34 PM

Then tone it down.

Armistead 09-19-10 12:47 PM

You took the Yamato to Midway......:haha:

A mod that will do just what you want. It works very nicely.

If sailing the Yamato right into Pearl itself and sinking everything there makes you happy... well, it's fine with me...have fun. Maybe you should ask for a mod where you can sail into New York and accept the American surrender. LOL

In the end, we ALL flavor the game to taste.

Modified Searchlights.

Why do you think this will work for SH4?

The Library/Search_Lights.dat/sim/zon files are not used for japanese ships in SH4 at all.

He'd need to alter stuff in Library/ShipParts/guns_radars.dat

JoeCorrado 09-19-10 02:24 PM

I tested this a while back (I think it was this mod, anyway) in SH4, 1.5 it worked for lights mounted on Japanese merchant ships- at least I seem to recall that it worked. The searchlights are generic, aren't they? Since it toned down the lights mounted on Japanese ships, I think that it will do the same for any ship with the lights mounted.

He can try it and see if it works. I think that it will, if not- then he can try something else. I am just trying to help the guy out. There is a mod out there, maybe one of Webster's if not this one? I had this one in my backup folder so that is why I offered it as a solution.

Over 1300 downloads, so obviously he is not the only one who ever wanted to tone the things down.

tater 09-19-10 02:38 PM

That's an SH3 mod, though.

All the SH4 ships use the SH4 searchlights:

LinkName=Type_92_Reflector_base_JP

The SH3 one is LinkName=REF_big or LinkName=REF_small.

If you thought it helped, you were imagining it :)

You should have said so in the first place.

S3D is linked from the mod tools. My suggestion would be to use the desire to do this to start modding yourself. That's how it starts :) You want something, and start messing around. If you get it working, you'll be so stoked you'll go to the next thing. It's fun, really :)

I dont have the tech "know how" really, rather busy with school as well.I actually got to play patrol this weekend for the first time in a couple months.I may give it a try but it'd get finished quicker if some of the experts out there did it, prob work/look better as well.

Everyone starts out clueless. You learn by doing it.
