model Vertexes

how do you get a model in game when it has no vertexes, it's a model i've been working on for fun and it's pretty good, it has open space for weapons, and is designed to be about 10meters off the waters surface, and be able to dive to a maximum depth of 3500ft.
(actually it belongs in space but thats not the point)

these are clues of what im trying to get in game.

heres another hint,

it's called dominion.

You can't have a model with no vertices, as it wouldn't have any geometric data and wouldn't exist. That model you show there has 42,359 vertices, so what is the problem you are having?

iowa101 08-21-10 12:02 PM

i don't know exactly. i try to import the model which is obj format into s3d, but it gives this error message

http://a.imageshack.us/img833/1846/error2c.jpg

and i must have missed read it sorry.

Nisgeis 08-21-10 12:09 PM

Hmmm, I've never seen that error, so I'm not sure what went wrong. Index would suggest some sort of animation or something like that - does the file name you are trying to import end in any numbers?

iowa101 08-21-10 12:11 PM

the daring is on hold due to lack of bottom hull area, so i thought i'd post this ship which i admit is quite different as it's meant for space not the ocean, but if you know what it's from you'll know why.

but it turns out that wont go in either, not sure why but ok, i just keep trying it and see what happens.

iowa101 08-22-10 12:01 AM

no the file name is dominion.obj, but it does have animations i believe but i dont know how to get rid off them.

Nisgeis,

I have had that same error after exporting from Blender after editing an existing object and trying to keep the material/textures of the original. I don't have any idea why either, but the model I used didn't have any animations that I know of. All the animated parts were separate objects in the .dat file.
I don't know enough to be any help, except for being almost positive there were no animations involved with the error.

im not sure but it doesnt have a texture yet, so i cant say if that contributes to the error.

Maybe the obj file is not correct, face indices in OBJ Format starts with 1 instead of 0. If you can make the model.obj for download I can take a look.

iowa101 08-22-10 03:16 PM

ok mate ill post in ten mins

Without seeing your files,
I think I know the problem.
The Verts and Normals are mixed in the obj file.

Open it with Notepad.
If you see something like this.......

That's the problem.

Mesh Lab is a good program but it screws the obj file format for S3D.
That's how I found this problem.

I open the obj in RH and save and the problem is corrected.

iowa101 08-23-10 05:11 AM

not to sound stupid (because that's already know lol)

rh= rhino3d or something else

iowa101 08-23-10 05:52 AM

right i save but the error still pops up.

do i save as or just save

Madox58 08-23-10 05:56 AM

Sorry.
RH = Right Hemisphere's Deep Exploration.

What program are you useing to do the 3D work?
:hmmm:

iowa101 08-23-10 06:06 AM

well i downloaded rhino lol, it sorted the problem but now it gives me a new error

ill' post a screen in a sec

I loaded it into 3DSMax and it has many duplicate faces some with normals inside and some with normals outside and they are z-fighting. There are to many of these duplicate faces to edit them manually, it might be easier to create a new model from it's source and make sure that only one object is created/exported.

iowa101 08-23-10 06:16 AM

not being funy, but i have no idea how to do any of this, i have only just started taking intrest into modelling and i learn at a snails pace lol, i need someone to help if they can, redoing a model may sound easy but its not

iowa101 08-23-10 11:48 AM

guys, if you say rebuild a model would that mean redoing the hole thing from scratch.

because the ship has no plans, not layouts that i know of, so if theres an easier way to rebuild without destroying what i have.
can you let me know and also give me a list of softwares that would allow me to do so.

i have rhino3d and it has a rebuild mesh app, but i not sure if that would work to be honest.
what do you think....

thanks for any advice on this :yeah:

From where did you get this model or did you exported it from a particular game?

The one who has created this model or exported it from a game not done it in a clean way. The model is available several times in this file, each with different orientations of the face normals. This can be corrected only manually in hours within a 3D app by selecting all unnecessary faces and delete them.

tater 08-23-10 12:28 PM

I want new ships in game, and only started trying last week or so.

I started with a simple merchant, and it's still hard. My suggestion would be to try something more manageable to learn, rather than starting with an aircraft carrier.
