Hi Everyone, Another New Guy.

Hi all,

A quick history for you all.

I bought SH4 about a year and half ago and really enjoyed what little time I got to use it, then I got SH5 about a month ago and again (aside from the common problems ) really enjoyed it. After going onto ubisoft forums and here I noticed how many of the community rated SH3 as the best of the series, so last Friday I purchased SH3 for me and my mate, hoping to convert him from Flight Sim to Sub Sim ( It would appear i was successful he loves it, I hope to get him registered on the forums as well.:yeah:).

I consider my self a real novice with the series though, but look to put in some serious hours to get the most out of what seems to be the most amazing Simulation I have ever experienced.

So I would appreciate any help with the following please.

I purchased SH3 through Steam and was wondering if I have to manually update or does it do it automatically?

As I got it through Steam am I able to still install any of the mods?

If so is there instructions as to how I can do this.

Is there an in depth manual anywhere which explains the game in more detail?

I hope this isnt to long winded, and thanks for any help & advice.

We all started there once. Some of us have stayed there.

I'm not sure what you mean by update in this particular case. Please elaborate.

Yes, but I'm not sure how, as I'm addicted to owning discs. I would make sure I kept a backup copy stored in a safe place, just in case. I do that anyway, as I've discovered that I don't have to reinstall the whole game when I mess up mods; I can just dump the Data folder and replace it with a copy of the saved stock one.

I don't think so, but you can always ask questions here. Some have said that Subsim is the best manual ever created.

Not at all. Once you get to know us you'll see what long-winded really means.

Click on 'User CP' in the upper left corner of this page. Scroll down to 'Edit Your Signature' under 'Settings & Options'. The rest should be obvious.

Welcome aboard!

I think if you've just purchased SH3 you should have a version that is fully patched and will not need updating (as far as official Ubi patches go).

There have been discussions in the SH3 forum about how best to handle the Steam version of the game when it comes to modding and whatnot, probably a search of that forum for "Steam" related threads and posts would be the best place to start.

Thanks again guys for the great welcome and info, already been a great help.

As per the above plus.....simply point the GWX installer to your SH3 root game folder, I should imagine it will be something like C|Steam\Games I use discs also so I'm not quite sure but it will be easy enough for you to establish.

My advice on mods would be to only use those that can be enabled via JSGME (at least until you become more proficient with mods and their heirarchy etc.)

JSGME comes ready packed in GWX3.0 (get the files from my FF account because there have been numerous reports of corrupted d/l's from the GWX website) but the latest version is available from:

http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/sof...cts-jsgme.html

As for specific mods, they are far too many to mention. Try looking at my FF account for starters, all those there are tried and tested, you should have a look in the SH3 workshop section....the world is your oyster in that sense.

Any further queries, don't hesitate to post them.....there are many here who are more than happy to advise http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...s/thumbsup.gif

Thats great Jimbuna,

Can I just check something might sound daft, but when you say the JSGME is ready packed does that meen I only need the GWX3.0 and it will install that as well?

Yes...but you must remember, Gwx3.0 is not exactly a brand new/latest super mod, there is a newer version available from the jscones website address I posted in my previous thread.

General Maximus 06-21-10 03:21 PM

Cheers again.

Ok I just downloaded the latest JSGME but here is another daft question, i looked on your list and unsure which of the GWX3.0 files i need is it all of them that have GWX3 in the title?

Jimbuna 06-21-10 03:53 PM

If you want to d/l directly, you want the GWX3.0 exe + the 7 bin files.

If you use torrents then you have a choice of d/l as above or the single file exe installer.

Don't forget the GWX3.0 CFG file for SH3 Commander.

General Maximus 06-21-10 04:04 PM

ok so its exe + 7 bin file and cfg for commander I take it i need to d/l commander as well but install after GWX3.?

Sailor Steve 06-21-10 04:12 PM

SH3 Commander is actually an external tool that operates from your desktop. It works with any supermod or none at all, and doesn't care when it is installed.

General Maximus 06-21-10 04:14 PM

Cheers guys your help is hugely appreciated, and I do apologise for being a pest

Sailor Steve 06-22-10 12:16 AM

:sunny:

Not even close to being a pest. There's almost no such thing here. Nobody seems to be happy until everyone's problems are solved.

Well, we did have one guy who asked a question and when he got an answer proceeded to argue and ask the same question over and over again...

But that's not you. :D

An Englishman should never apologise...they are never wrong...it is others that misinterpret the words :DL

I should have mentioned that you only need the SH3 Commander CFG file if you intend to use Commander, I highly recommend that you do.

You can get Commander from here:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...do=file&id=733

If you use it, install it after GWX3.0

General Maximus 06-22-10 06:22 AM

Well here is an update......

Got all the files d/l JSGME & GWX3.0 & SH3 Commander

I decided to do at least 1 career before installing the mods so I can get used to the basics as I have been advised that GWX pretty much makes it a new Simulation.

One quickie on the installation GWX3.o says it installs JSGME 2 do I have to uninstall this before I install the latest JSGME?

As well passed all my exams and started my career last night.

1st patrol - Went ok once I worked out hydrophones dont work on the surface and was able to find ships, oh and stopped admiring the thunder storm in the north sea. Managed to sink 2 small merchants & attacked a C2 cargo with my last 2 torpedo's however the first didnt detonate so didnt manage to sink her.

2nd patrol - Before i left dock managed to add flak gun which I didnt know how to on the first. Managed to sink a C2 cargo and a coastal merchant up to now but only got 1 torpedo left but will have to see....

On a finishing note I have to say how FANTASTIC! SH3 is :yeah: got so much to learn and so little time.....
