88, Hitler, and you.
So about 3 weeks ago I was recruited into a Battle Ground mod's clan, by the clans German leader. Which I've most likely been kicked out of since I haven't been to a single training mission since the first one I went too, but I digress :haha:.
Anyways, when he asked if I had wanted to join and I told him yes, he asked me to remove the 88 from my username(Spike88) because it might offend the German members of the clan. I asked why and he told me that 88 means Heil Hitler, a further wikipedia and I find out that it's Neo Nazi code for HH which is Heil Hitler. To appease him, I removed the 88 and went on my cheery way. My question for you, especially the German's of this board, when you see my name, do you honestly think of Heil Hitler? Does it make me look like a Neo-Nazi? Would I offend people by having an 88 tattoo if I was in Germany? Especially since I'm blond with blue/green eyes? As a side note, It's my favorite number and I've used it since I was 13/14. But I chose it out of any other number because It's my birth year and it sounds better than 12 or 10(Month and Date of Birth) |
It makes me think of a different WW2 German - the infamous 88mm gun. Of course the Germans themselves used the larger designation - 8.8cm.
But I don't see anything bad about it. Of course by ancestry is distantly German, but I'm American, so I don't count as far as your question goes. But I had to say something, if just to pad my post count.:sunny: |
Ive heard of this 88 thing, Personaly dont think they would think anything.

it was the last thing i thought of until you mentioned it. |
I only remembered having heard of it when you mentioned it... wouldn't have crossed my mind otherwise. Which doesn't mean a lot since I'm neither German (except by ancestry) nor do I live in Germany.
Like Steve the first thing I think about when I hear "88" in relation to something German or WWII is the (in)famous gun. Actually one of my training buddies is former military (well a lot of them are) but we joke around a lot about me commanding a u-boat, and once when I mentioned sinking a ship with guns instead of torpedoes he was all interested in what kind of guns I had on my boat and I said "an 88-" and before I could finish his eyes got big and I had to stop and say "not THAT 88!" |
So... this is germany
My IP-adress for LAN-parties was .88 - first call was "YouŽre a nazi?" :damn: And for your upcoming activities in german waters, donŽt use: - 88 - Heil Hitler - 18 - Adolf Hitler - 28 - shortcut for B&H - Blood and Honour - 74 - GD = Großdeutschland - 84 - HD = Heil Deutschland - 444 - DDD = Deutschland den Deutschen - Germany for germans (only) - 19/8 - S / H - Sieg heil - 1919 - 2x 19. letter = SS |
Actually the 88 is a number that you shouldn't put in your name over here. It' has been used too much by Nazis to express phrases they aren't allowed to express in their normal form here.
It always leaves a bad taste in the mouth.:-? @PhanotmLord I wasn't aware of all the other numbers.:o |
I do so believe that the fear of numbers is an actual phobia. I do so believe that the German government suffers from such phobia.

Germany really should get past this stuff or are there really that many Nazis today?
|
Yes!!! WeŽre evil.. no... mega evil! And if we dont opress the numbers and symbols weŽll rise again and conquer the world. WeŽll reign in terror again! HAR HAR! :stare:
Ehm... what i wanted to say is, i think we have not more nazis than any other country around the world. |

Hatred and racism in this world comes and goes in all directions, that you see it as mostly coming towards people with pale pigmentation is purely a matter of a narrow perspective. |

A friend of mine is definitely not going to show his black African GF the beauty of East-German landscapes. The chance that it becomes unhealthy is just a bit too high.:nope: |

As i've hinted at before in the past, i work for an internet security corp. Part of my job is finding websites that fit in certain categories or criteria. That includes "Hate sites". So, in order to find these sites, i had to learn their lingo so to speak. Most hate and discrimination pages, don't openly advertise, nor do the people who frequent them. Like any other exclusive group, they use lingo, code, or symbols that only their fellow's would recognize. Some are quite obvious, like 88. Some kinda obvious like runic symbols, others are composite numbers, like 1488. Which is code for the 14 words of david lane and HH. Another is RAHOWA, which is "racial holy war". Some places make obvious refrences to the turner diaries. Stormfront, even people who havent delved into this very far have heard of. Another group is known as "Combat 18". There's also several groups that go under "Blood and honor" , which coincidenly is the english translation to the inscription found on hitler youth knives. Other sites mix racial bigotry with reliegion. See church of the world creator. (aka "creativity movement") One "tactic" hate groups use is spread their "message" (aside from religion) is music, and you'll often find links to their favorite bands. Some hate groups are more covert, or sly in their intent. Look around enough and you'll find nordic "heritage" sites. Innocent looking on the surface, but dig deeper into it, and you'll find the veiled "hate" within. Let me tell ya, i have read far more into this then any one person should have to. Hate and neo nazi sites are hard to find because you have to acutally read their crap to see what their message. Makes my head hurt after awhile. |
