oscar19681 05-14-10 02:47 PM

space ships. Serously there is never gonna be a silent hunter 6 or 7 .But if there will be give us some modern day subsim. Dangerous waters had potential but the grafics were horrible Serously its just to boring looking at 2d game screens. At least if it was 3d i had something to look at.

:hmmm: never went there,sh2 was my first sub sim.

Sailor Steve 05-16-10 05:05 PM

Just sayin' that those two worked perfectly out of the box. There were some mods for SH1, but they didn't fix things - just made it better.

Iron Budokan 05-16-10 05:18 PM

Can we start talking about Silent Hunter 12 now? I think it's time.

Here's the reality. I very much doubt we will ever see a SH6...much less a 7.

corvette k225 05-16-10 07:17 PM

I think that this will be the last subsim we will see. Boy I hope I'am wrong
on this.:damn:

tonibamestre 05-17-10 05:03 AM

Hmm... if that's true why did you, yourself bother uploading patch 1.31 for Silent Hunter to the Subsim Downloads area? :har:

As far as Aces of the Deep's "perfection" the patch readme on the Subsim downloads page states....

When saving a game, the number of deck gun rounds remaining will be correctly saved.
A gauge has been added showing amount of compressed air and water in the boat.
Torpedoes were vanishing from the torpedo loading screen; this was fixed.
The music for "Ride of the Valkyres" and "Tipperary" have been added.
Crash on reporting contact bug fixed.

Very few PC games have ever been perfect out of the box no matter how far back you go take those rose colored classes off Steve!

I would call them "spartane" graphics, I think too the game had (huge) potential, unfortunately Sonalyst abandoned the simulator totally leaving it with significant bugs. The fun in SC,DW for me was with the building of tactics, witch require essential and not misunderstandable graphics :O:

Give me Harpoon 2011

The thing we need is a vista version (Win 7) of the best naval game ever, Harpoon. With today's graphic capabilities and that game mechanics, we'd have a winner.

I'm not talking about the Harpoon 3 version with all those silly rings and message boxes. I'm thinking of the first Windows version, actually just the DOS game ported to windows. Give us that in today's technologies!

For it's time, that game was top shelf. It had a great mission editor that was easy to use and made sense.

Sonarman 05-17-10 07:04 AM

Probably the Harpoon 3 with all those "silly rings" is a lot closer to the reality of an Aegis system. However I do agree with you although Harpoon plays well & is a very deep experience the way it is a 3D visualization would be nice. And yes it definitely needs a new UI. Did you see the canceled Harpoon 4 which Ubi was working on there's some old reference to it at combatsim.com It was very close to being released when canceled.

Take a look at The Red Pill or Global Conflict Blue for modern indie versions of Harpoon

If there's gonna be 7 (somehow you skipped 6) then here is my suggestion: keep UBISoft away from it. Give it to Jane's or resurrect Microprose and commision them. :haha:

Sonarman 05-17-10 08:59 AM

Janes themselves have never really been in the software business only their name and data from their books was licensed by EA to create 688i/Longbow etc. and I don't think that EA would touch sim games with a barge pole nowadays.

As for Microprose it is partially resurrected in "Wild" Bill Stealey's Thriller Publishing but they have their hands full at the moment with an M1 Tank Platoon remake and a completely new M4 Sherman sim. In truth they are probably using the old iM1A2 & iPanzer as templates and harnessing new graphics engines to them for the new games. On the "other side of the Microprose fence" at Firaxis Sid Meier seems to have sadly lost any interest in returning to the genre.

conus00 05-17-10 09:13 AM

What I meant was "give it to Jane's to license and oversee the production" (poor choice of words, my bad). As far as Microprose goes: can you imagine u-boat simulation in depth of Falcon 4.0?

Oh well, back to reality from daydreaming....

Sonarman 05-17-10 09:29 AM

We live in hope, although maybe we should look East rather than West, Oleg Maddox has for sometime been stating that playable ground/naval units will be a part of the future of Storm of War, though I'd also love to see what an Eagle Dynamics (Lock On/ Black Shark) naval sim would be like.

After Sid Miers' "Railroads" fiasco from Firaxis, I hope he stays away from offering games altogether. There were tons of people who experienced his original "Railroad Tycoon" deeply disappointed by "Railroads". It played like a Disney cartoon with the trains way out of proportion with the scenery, the stock market was a joke, no ability to choose opponents, lots and lots of CTD's in game, and I'm just mentioning the high points. Essentially Railroads was just like the Ubisoft SH series in many ways.

It's a real shame PC game development has come to this state.
