The backlash begins, will you defend SH5?

Silent Hunter 5 has received two ratings so far on Amazon.com, both for one star, which is the worst rating you can get, as there is no one star. Both bad ratings cite DRM as the reason for the poor ratings.

LOL A star is born:haha:

Despite all the fuss, DRM is rapidly turning out to be a non-problem and people who claimed that they would never buy SH5 because of it are changing their minds. The people who gave SH5 one star on Amazon because of DRM are backward thinking idiots.

Not that we'd want to Generalise, of course. :)

I ain't called The General for nothin' :O: I will defend SH5 and I will take on all-comers

Well hopefully people buying it think twice...

...before believing reviews that say NOTHING of the actual game.

... or they have exactly the kind of patchy connection that sends the game haywire.

Didn't read the posts on Amazon, so I do not know how much of it is pure hatred for the DRM and how much is backed with actual bad experience, but either way I wouldn't go as far as calling it a non-problem. Especially since it was discovered HOW intrusive that stuff actually is. But thats another story for another thread.

We must destroy the village in order to save it.

The only rating that counts is the sales volume since that will decide if there is a SH6.

Based on all the entusiasm and dare I say it, all the love around here, I would SH5 should sell at least as well as SH3.

...btw, is the DRM boycott already over?....I see many of the posters who said they would never buy the game under any circumstances have already bought it...:arrgh!:

Letum 03-03-10 02:35 PM

Two negative Amazon ratings?

That's not really a crushing condemnation is it?

...who?

Nisgeis 03-03-10 02:36 PM

One review is a guy who travels a lot and the other is a Sailor who can't play it on deployment. If you have played the game and love it, why not rate it on amazon, to balance out the negative reviews?

ichso 03-03-10 02:37 PM

My not-buying is still not exclusively because of DRM right now but I would also still rather have my savegames on my own computer. Also, I tend to turn the internet connection off when I'm not using it, so DRM meddles with my good habits :O:

On the other hand, amazon reviews (especially for video games) are known for not being about the game itself. Often people will already post when the game is not even released, just to tell how excited they are.

Galanti 03-03-10 02:39 PM

I can defend the bold step of introducing RPG-elements into the game, as long as they are more or less reasonable.

I can defend defending limiting the stock game to just Type 7 and 43 on the grounds that it is almost worth it for interiors. Even though I know it's more likely a business decision to squeeze some more rupees out of us.

But I can't defend the DRM scheme, even though I will likely have no issues with it, because there are clearly others who will have problems.

Nor can I defend ditching the old analogue, period-fitting UI for a slick, futuristic one. This one design decision above all others disgusts me to no end. It might almost be defensible if it actually made the game easier to use, but it's not. There's no compass. The fuel, battery and CO2 indicators are buried on tab 2 of the subsystems.

You can't review things that haven't been released, so the UK version can't be reviewed until the 5th March. Maybe they changed it because of that.

Portman 03-03-10 02:41 PM

It's number 1 in sales right now in the adventure (WTF?) category, so the negative reviews don't seem to be stopping anyone. Once I get some playtime in I was going to post a review on Amazon that actually focuses on the game instead of the DRM. Also, I'll throw up a review on my blog and will put it up here if we don't get flooded with them before then.

I know people are mad/annoyed about DRM but I can't stand it when they go and ruin a game's rating like that on Amazon just because they don't like something about the game. I use the ratings to make purchase decisions and have noticed an increase of non-reviews like this which makes it hard for people actually shopping for a new game to play.

The General 03-03-10 02:45 PM

I think Gametrailers.com is one of the industry's most influential websites right now, so I'm interested to see what rating they give Silent Hunter 5. As a matter of fact, if you visit the site you can be the first to post a review for SH5 there:

That would be a real improvement if they changed it that way.
I just checked amazon.de (still on pre-order there). And there are no comments so far

Ubisoft have sold SHV as "action adventure" on their website.
