Favorite dreadnought - era ship classes

Hello; as preparation for an upcoming SH4 mod I wanted to find out what your favorite early 20th Century ships were. Additional comments, elaboration, photos, &c are most welcome! I've already started some ship models & I just wanted to get an idea of your priorities & favorites. You can select more than one, FYI :DL

I've always had a soft spot for the "Iron Duke"! :yep: To me, she's a bit like an unsung hero of Jutland, who fought hard only to watch the battlecruisers get all the attention & glory.

Keep the suggestions coming in!

Sledgehammer427 08-15-09 11:28 PM

its pretty funny IABL, you are still hiding what you are doing when we all know its a Cold War mod :har:

looks to be promising if you are making these kinda ships though.

iambecomelife 08-15-09 11:30 PM

What Cold War Mod? I'm doing a "Sealab 2021" mod, where you take on the role of good ol' Murph!

:har::yeah:

Well, it looks like the Hun battlecruisers are hanging on to a tenuous lead. All you British subsim fans had better get cracking! :stare:

iambecomelife 08-16-09 11:36 AM

And now the German dreadnoughts have taken the lead. Hmph. A fine blow to the Royal Navy's pride. :dead:

:haha:

I like where this topic is going... a WW1 mod?

BB-35 Texas!

Had the pleasure to tour her pretty thoroughly in the 2008 Subsim meet, and Nikimcbee and UndersealCpl and herr Onkel Neal took aim of her 5 inch guns at passing tankers astern of us :yeah:

I would be overjoyed to see a WWI mod here, i am working on trying to bring WWI into other naval sims and would just love to see it here with the graphics detail we can have with SH IV

i can help with data, doctrine, info, ship info, and any other details as i qualified for command in WWI units, light and heavy, squadrons and fleet command many years ago with the Naval Wargame Society and the 1200 Ship Society in the UK and have continued my interest for over 35 years.

Full Speed Ahead !

I am very partial to the light cruisers and the older heavy crusiers of the Scharnhorst class and style:

here is an SMS Emden by Chris Schell that I have, the model is very detailed .... and she would make a great addition to the mod, there may be some other 3D WWI ships out there, but there arent many that I have found yet....

Chris is working on a series of US dreadnoughts to re create the Great White Fleet .... i dont know if he plans any UK or German BB's, or if he would let us convert these to fit in SHIV but we could ask...

I Second the Admiral,

I can't do much 3d work, but I can help with the file (.dat, .sim) editing and so on, I guess if I can find enough blueprints and stuff I can help with the 3d

British battlecruisers were pure artworks...They could have all the faults of this world but they were just too cool:|\\!!!!!!!!!!

Admiral Von Gerlach 08-17-09 01:33 PM

"there seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today,"

Admiral Beatty Commander of the RN Battlecruisers at Jutland after 2 of them blew up in short order due to inadequate protection of magazines :)

but i love the BC's too, esp the HMS Tiger!

Sailor Steve 08-18-09 12:21 PM

Since I've spent the better part of 20 years working on my own WW1 tabletop miniatures game, you just rang my bell!

The only boxes I didn't tick were the Q-Ship and Submarine ones, as I'm a huge fan and student of the surface ships of the era.

I also ticked Other, and my 'other' is the destroyers of the period. I've made many lists of the various pre-Dreadnought TBDs and their comparative strengths and weaknesses, and have performance and combat charts for each individual class, and for the individual boats within each class where they varied (which for the TBDs was quite a bit). I also have made comparative charts for each of the big ships, including all the various changes made to HMS Dreadnought's 12pdr gun layout and rangefinder locations over her life.

So, yeah, this is pretty cool for me.

@ Admiral Von Gerlach: It was 3 battlecruisers, and it was a lot more complicated than just the armor protection.

Nice comment. One problem was British explosives lacking the same stabilizing chemicals as Germans'.

Always thought it was kind of funny how the "Tiger", which was just as badly armored as the other BC's, got absolutely riddled at Jutland - including one hit near a magazine - and basically shrugged it off! :88) IIRC she had few fatalities and was repaired pretty quickly.

keltos01 08-18-09 02:08 PM

Maybe we could scrounge up those models from Shells of Fury and give them a better environment to sail in ?

and a campaign to go with it of course !
