Why doesn't my Uboot smoke?

Every other ship I have encountered so far, in game, produces a lot of smoke while the engines are running. While surfaced, why doesn't the Uboot produce smoke when the diesel engines are running? Obviously smoke would be a very bad thing, but I'm just wondering why they don't.

Is it a special fuel mixture, an intentional diesel engine design, or did they smoke in real life but SH3 doesn't model it, etc.?

It's not modelled, but you can add it with Rubini's Water Streams and Smoke mod - adds smoke from your engines and water streams from the hull.

I'll try and search it out for you.

Rubini's Water Streams and Smoke Mod-It is an excellent mod. I highly recommend it. :yeah:

Good eye candy.

Welcome aboard shrike! :salute:

Thanks guys, I take it is this mod here:

http://www.bts-mods.com/?page=sh3user=Rubini

It doesn't mention the smoke part, but describes the water streams.

I don't think so-I believe it was made into a combi-mod with both in it. I downloaded one mod and enabled it and it had both.

Stand by. I'll do a little digging.

:)

Found the water streams at: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=133541

I think the smoke is part of it, but I may be wrong. Can anyone help out?

sharkbit 06-18-09 12:00 PM

Try this one:

hsie did a combi mod for both.

:)

Besides smoking stunts yer growth... :yep:

Sorry I could'nt resist.. :nope:

Your U-Boat was probably built in California and had to meet certain emission requirements. When you hit cruising speed, does the electric engine kick in to reduce smoke? :DL

Thank you sharkbit. I'd forgotten that Racerboy did the original exhaust smoke mod.

Sailor Steve 06-18-09 12:06 PM

Racerboy created the diesel exhaust smoke mod. Rubini made the water streams. Philipp Thomsen combined them. H.sie has the latest version here:

I believe so. There are files for them all.
I've only used them with the VIIC and the IXC however so I don't know for sure.

Sailor Steve 06-18-09 12:37 PM

I don't know about this version specifically, because I simply installed Water Streams and the PT's Exhaust Smoke for WS separately; but doing it that way works fine for my Type II.

Shrike37,
Good of you to start this thread as I have wondered the same thing myself, why we dont see smoke from the diesels, would make it far more immersive. You have tempted me to download the mod, which I am in the process of doing as we speak :D ,sounds great.I am getting the one mentioned by Sailor Steve.

Lastly, can someone just give me a quick explanation as to what exactly the water stream element of the mod does?.I am guessing it adds the rivulets of water that would run laterally along the hull as it glides through the water?

Cheers

Here are a couple of shots I made with a Type II leaving Kiel.

Water Streams

And Exhaust Smoke - just enough, not too much.

Thanks sharkbit, looks good, although I may not get chance to see them water streams as I disable external cam.Maybe next patrol I may have a look. What really interests me more is the diesel exhaust smoke

Sailor Steve 06-18-09 02:39 PM

If you use one of the 'free cam' mods that lets you walk around the bridge, you can 'lean over the side' and watch the water streams that way.:sunny:

bert8for3 06-18-09 02:54 PM

BTW has anyone adapted the water stream / exhaust combimod to work with OLCGold. I haven't had time yet to check out if it's a overwrite that breaks something, or one which just overwrites without breaking. I don't recall offhand which file it was; I think it was just one.
