Why does the crash dive go to ~70m?
When using crash dive, you get under the surface faster than a regular dive. However, it makes you go to 70m and you can't edit the depth until you get to the 70m.Obviously , this is a problem in shallow water. Why didn't they have the crash dive depth be something more like 20m and then you can just continue to take the sub down manually as deep as you need to go after that?
That way you can crash dive in all water depths when those pesky aircraft or destroyers show up. |
My guess is that it has to do with the fact that you're getting under at flank speed and that was probably the depth that you would have reached before you could stop the downward momentum of the sub.

The best solution is to just hit the "A" key (maintain depth) at whatever point into your crash dive you wish. The sub will immediately attempt to level off.

A safety feature so the realistic players at 2048 tc wouldn't zip past crush depth. :haha:

Owing to a small bug in the original game, any attempt to alter the pre-set crash-dive depth, before the crash-dive has completed, results in the U-boat not levelling out properly.
This can affect depth-keeping properties - you may find you have to travel excessively fast to hold your depth steady. This problem is particularly severe with the NYGM super-mod, where the U-boat is trimmed down anyway (that is, it has a tendency to keep sinking at very slow speed), but it also affects the stock game. Not sure about GWX, since the U-boat is trimmed up (has a tendency to rise) at very slow underwater speeds. The golden rule: Do NOT change the depth of a crash-dive until AFTER the crash-dive has completed. As an alternative, just diving at flank speed and also pressing the 'D' key is nearly always fast enough, and does not cause the crash-dive depth-keeping problem. If you accidently interrupt a crash-dive by changing depth, you can correct all the problems by returning to a depth above the crash-dive depth, then crash-dive again, allowing the U-boat to level out properly. Answer to the original question: When you conduct a normal dive the tanks are flooded and the sub is taken down. American practice was to dive to 100 feet and then come back up to periscope depth once proper trim was assured. I'm betting German practice was the same, so "Periscope Depth" is not realistic from the surface, nor is "Decks Awash".
In an emergency 'crash' dive, everything is flooded, the boat is taken to flank speed and the planes are put on full down. Several hundred tons of steel is hard to stop once it gets going downward, so 70 meters is, as I understand it, the depth they really did pull out of. If you want to go to 20 meters, click "20" on the dial and order flank speed. You should get there faster. If not, blame the game. |

As Jimbuna pointed out, the easiest solution is to edit the CrashDepth in the sub file.
I used to amend mine to 25m. Peter Cremer in U333 said the test in the baltic was to get to 20-25m in around 25 seconds. As has also been stated, DO NOT interrupt crash dive until it has finished i.e. levelled out at the pre-set depth (default 70m). Doing so can have some screwy effects. |
It is embarrasing to crash dive into the bottom though. :oops:

I haven't tried setting a different depth on the depth gauge during a CD though. That may be an issue. I have had depth control problems when CDing from periscope depth. My sub just keeps going down and depth control is very difficult. You have to maintain a higher speed to stay level which causes problems when trying to evade the destroyer that caused you to CD in the first place. :) |
