CHESS: Matchmaking thread

If anyone is interested in starting up another chess game, post here to make yourself available and arrange your matches.
Chess-related discussion is also encouraged.

fatty 03-07-09 06:20 PM

I'm down, anyone want to play?

CaptainHaplo 03-07-09 09:37 PM

How are you guys doing this - pbem (thread post instead) like? Hmm - I could set up my board beside the pc... intersting idea.

fatty 03-07-09 10:18 PM

Pretty much. Here is an example.

Onkel Neal 03-07-09 11:38 PM

When you play online like this, how do you know you are not playing against a hot shot chess computer? Or have you guys already surpassed that level? :88)

UnderseaLcpl 03-07-09 11:43 PM

I'm using the "Arena" chess program w/o engines to map my game against Sky. Here's a link if you would like to try it. http://www.playwitharena.com/directory/download.htm
it is free and conveniently displays algebraic notation for all your moves. There's a link for an engine-less version in there; "Arena 1.1 without engines "

Interested in joining us, CH?

Honor system, really. Besides, even if someone was cheating they'd only be robbing themselveves of the fun. An honest player would still enjoy a good game against them, regardless.

Aramike 03-08-09 02:25 AM

Okay, seriously, and I'm somewhat ashamed to admit this, although I love chess, I'm terrible at it. It's been suggested that I over-think, under-think, don't think, etc. when it comes to the game.

But, I'd be willing to play a match.

UnderseaLcpl 03-08-09 03:17 AM

No reason to be ashamed, AM. If you're ever feeling embarrassed about your abilities, just come over to the thread where I'm playing Skybird and watch me get trounced for a bit:DL

It doesn't have to be all about competition, just what you can learn from it. You and Fatty should have a match. Here's my last match against him, in which I got owned; http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...rsealcpl+fatty

You should play against him, now that you have intel on his playing style.:DL

Nice to see chess resurface :). I'd like to play a game this time around, Fatty or Aramike? (or any one else).

Cheers Porphy

I'm up for a game if anyone wants one.
I'm lower-intermediate.

Gentleman's deal, a question of honour, if you want. We cannot know. We trust.

However, your fear is justified. The server of Hamburg-based Chessbase, the global market leader for chess databases and chess-related software, is said to be notoriously infested with people cheating, like manipulating time control and using actiove engines to calculate mopves they claim their own moves then. That's why interest is constantly detoirating over there. But they have good live coverages of major tournaments, sometimes, and good training courses with professionals.

CaptainHaplo 03-08-09 11:11 AM

Sure- count me in.

I used to be pretty decent - not great. I haven't really played in years other than teaching my son to play, and playing a neophyte 8 year old isn't really a god way to sharpen these skills.

Who wants to jump in?

UnderseaLcpl 03-08-09 11:33 AM

Personally, I'd like to see Aramike vs. future President CaptainHaplo in a 64-square demonstration of effective foreign policy:DL

Is chess the new fad around here?

CaptainHaplo,

have we ever played before? I am not sure. I started these chess threads in I think 2006 and I played against many different interested GT visitors since then, so I lost track a bit. I'm not too good at the table-and-board-setting, but I am a better correspondence chess player and analyst, becasue I can take more timen two boards, and pencil and paper :) .

Interested? We have set the rules to no chess engines allowed, obviously, but chess GUI are allowed to keep track of moves and produce position diagrams, and literature where wanted is allowed, too. Pretty much the setting for regular correspondence chess.

Skybird 03-08-09 11:57 AM

People interested to see the old matches, they are still there, and can be found via search-button, advanced search, search term "chess".

When I use the simple search via the default popup window and enter "chess", I strangely do not get a single result, though. :hmmm:

Usually all match threads were marked with "CHESS MATCH X vs. Y" in the headline.

We had a spike in activity in May-September 2006, I think, and last year again. I still remember my two matches against Scandium 2006, my toughest opponent so far.

CaptainHaplo 03-08-09 01:02 PM

Skybird - sure thing. Though after the comment of "my toughest opponent so far" makes me wonder if my starting game isnt a result of being called out by the resident subsim chess wizard......We have never played before as I didn't know this existed - I didn't visit GT for the longest time after I joined.

If Aramike wants to have a go as well, I can do multiple games at once if he likes. Or anyone else for that matter - just don't overload me!

Skybird, since I accept the challenge (Lord help me!!!) - you get the pick of colors. Start the thread or let me know I need to based on your choice.

Though I do have a question. I am assuming en-passant is allowed?

Best of luck.

Yes, as I discovered to my lasting dismay in the last round of chess matches. :wah:

I could see it in a tournament or board where you track your wins and maybe even offer prizes, but nobody keeps score here. Don't think we have much to prove to a couple of strangers on the internet :DL
