Vote favorite U-boat here.

Just a bordem killer post. So whats your favorite and why?

Me? Type VIIB\C! Built to strangle England. Doenitz finaly had the boat he wanted. Fast enough, cheap enough, carried a decent load and was quite manouverable both up top and below. Not to big, Not to small.....Leaves just right!

U-84 02-14-09 11:03 PM

my favorite would be the VIIC...pretty fast, good loadout, good depth, and maneuverablility. Always last the longest in a VIIC...ur all around U-boat

My next favorite would be a IIA. Very good diving time, very hard to pick up on sonar and very very maneuverable, was the U-boat that made me a good shot being that u only have 5 torps and gotta make them count.

I officially after a previous career hate the IX series...the reasons why are pretty obvious LOL. Got two careers goin right now a IIA and a VIIC.

TheSamuraiJedi 02-14-09 11:41 PM

Type VIIC/B for me. The Type IX's just turn into death traps and the Type II just dont do it.

Jimbuna 02-15-09 09:44 AM

Any Type IX....plenty of firepower and range to explore far off places. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...ies/pirate.gif

Type VII.
VIIB for early war, then once the viic/41 is available with the Cobalt/GWX player sub.

Keelbuster 02-15-09 11:53 AM

VIIC/41 - the ultimate convoy attack boat.

Kptlt. Neuerburg 02-15-09 11:58 AM

My vote goes to the type VIIB/C and the type XXI.

Torplexed 02-15-09 12:34 PM

Despite their vulnerabilities I've always been fond of the IX. If the game had originally come with the diminutive Type XXIII, that one would be a favorite too. Only three torpedoes but that makes for a short, sweet patrol and I bet they would be tough to find on sonar.

Interesting - smaller than Type II?

A Very Super Market 02-15-09 12:37 PM

Around the same size. Obviously better suited to coastal waters, but in their short operational history, they did very well

Torplexed 02-15-09 12:43 PM

Yeah...the Type XXIII was the coastal version of the Type XXI. Sort of a futuristic electro-boot Type II.

Actually the type XXIII is smaller than the type II! Both in height and length with a smaller tower too! In my book Uboats in action it shows a profile of all the German subs used and I was shocked to see that the XXIII was 10\15% smaller than the type II!:o

Murr44 02-15-09 12:50 PM

I prefer the VIIC for the reasons stated above. Haven't had too much luck with the IX series; particularly the IXD2.

Imagine how difficult that makes it to catch with an Asidc beam. Top speed of 12 knots underwater ain't bad either. Crew of only 14 would be easy to manage. I used to replace the Type II with the XXIII in SH2 campaign game a lot. Fun.

Weiss Pinguin 02-15-09 11:26 PM

VIIB, mainly because it's what I've used the most, so I know all it's ins and outs.

That would've made a more interesting story-type thread, if there was a GWX-compatible playable... I may have to try out NYGM after U-1337 retires. :yeah:

Torplexed 02-15-09 11:35 PM

NYGM has a playable Type XXIII? :hmm2: I may have to change my plans.

Weiss Pinguin 02-15-09 11:58 PM

According to the NYGM 3.0 release thread:
Quote:

New Features (just a reminder of what I copied earlier):

1. The new Type XXIII boat.
2. The Real Weather Fix.
3. Racerboy's exhaust smoke for all U-boats. (Used with permission.)
4. Iambecomelife's new merchant fleet, incorporated into convoys.
5. Key changes made to stop the way in which a U-boat could pass into a convoy from the front, at periscope depth, without ever being detected by the front escort. You will have to be much more careful now.
6. Schnorchelling improved, so that the crew doesn't die of exhaustion in stormy weather. (This is much more complicated than it sounds.)
7. 'Bold' asdic decoy made much more realistic with new, unpublished, research.
8. More realistic battery ranges underwater.
9. SH3Patrol program updated with new patrol grids for the Type XXIII boat. (Also other changes.)
10. New updates for NYGM for those who use SH3Commander.
11. The east-coast minefield mod included, marks the giant British east-coast minefields on your map.
Then again I guess it doesn't actually say if it's playable... Will have to do a search...

Freiwillige 02-16-09 01:47 AM

I beleive that there is a way to get the playable XXIII into GWX 3.0. But yes the NGYM XXIII is playable from what I have read.

Freiwillige 02-16-09 01:50 AM

See page 2 of this thread for XXIII plus GWX.:salute:
