Zig-zagging convoys in GWX 3.0

I've just encountered a convoy in the eastern atlantic in October 1939, and unless my eyes decieve me it's strated to zig-zag in course!
Seems pretty lifelike to me.
Is this a new feature of GWX 3.0?

No, its stock SH3 behaviour. The dev team weren't idiots, they just weren't as realism-oriented as us.

I'm afraid not. If the convoy started zigzaging, it means you have been detected. Or the convoy got attacked by someone else.

Oh dear

Looks like I've been detected...
I wondered why that destroyer started racing in my direction, oops...:rotfl:

Its only 1939 for him. More like:

Alarm. :shifty:

nikimcbee 01-04-09 03:43 PM

I'm thinking they spotted you.

bigboywooly 01-04-09 03:47 PM

Convoys do zigzag without you being spotted
Long legs in both zigs and zags though
Too many waypoints can bring the game to a stand still

Had one my self tonight
Set my self up and tracked them so they would pass in front and then they go change course and end up going behind me with little chance of getting in a good position again

No convoys zigzagged as SH3 ships do when you are detected as would have been a nightmare to control

Paul_IronCoffin 01-04-09 07:22 PM

Convoys zig-zag whether they've seen you or not. All part of their ASW behaviour.

That's not quite correct mate.

In stock SH3... convoys will begin to zigzag against their original programmed course only if they if they spot you.

However, it is a totally separate behavior introduced by the GWX mod (not stock SH3) that causes convoys to make random course and speed changes as they make their way across the ocean on their overall path to their destinations.

Bigboywooly should know, he wrote the code into our campaign files that cause those random waypoint and speed changes to occur in GWX... which make long distance interceptions uncertain.

Two different types of 'zigzagging' occur in GWX as a result.

Err.. did I delineate either stock SH3 or otherwise? No. My mistake for assuming the OP hadn't employed GWXl, but still...

All the same. I simply explained a matter that confuses people on occasion. There is no need for you to be offended or to feel that anyone has been rude to you.

If that's directed at me personally, that I'm neither offended nor do I feel you've been rude. So much is lost in the written text...

Convoys are rude to me by zig-zagging and making interceptions difficult

Sometimes I think the subsim forums are the only place where people are polite...

I think what you meant to say was GWX used the random waypoint area, and random waypoint-forking functions first (as opposed to stock Sh3). You make it sound like nobody (scenario/campaign creators) before GWX could make that happen because the (hard program-)code wasn't there before BBW touched it (which he couldn't have since hacking that code is illegal). I'm sure someone could have used it before GWX if they learned all the details of the mission editor before BBW did. He was clever enough to look deeper than what Ubisoft gave as example. (caveat: I have never seen the stock campaign files in the mission editor)

More often than not matey....more often than not http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...s/thumbsup.gif

And here I have been all this time thinking that the convoys were zig-zagging to get out of the way of all of those GWX whales migrating south for the winter. Hmm...:rotfl:

That explains the odd behavior of a convoy I was tracking/attacking over several days. It originally was heading WNW, towards Greenland. 300 km away from the GL coast, it turned and sailed due S for 2 days, then eventually set course for St. John's.

I had a sneaky suspicion they hadn't spotted me. The destroyer was heading in my general direction, not straight towards me! Thank you so much for this amazing mod.
Vanilla silent hunter 3 is like a completly different game.
2 other brilliant things I've experienced with GWX:
-Hearing whale song on my Hydrophones.
-Getting helped by other surfaced U-boats attacking a convoy
