Looks cut and dry to me. Baddie breaks in with weapon. Baddie get popped. Oh well. Glad Harry home owner was a good shot. Family safe and all is well. Great ending to the story.

Good on him. If he'd done that in the UK though he'd be in prison for manslaughter by now, bloody stupid country.

I should imagine that under identical circumstances (armed intruder, women and children at risk of serious/life threatening harm and hopefully a licenced firearm certificate).

The Police would only 'go through the motions', knowing full well that a jury would probably reach a verdict of self defence.

Poor home owner, he would have been so damn scared for his family, I hope he and his family get through this ok

As for the second place getter, oh well "**** happens" ;)

Well, jolly good so long as it was self defense and not just New TV/Wireless/cash/goods defense.

How on earth did the intruder get a weapon like that?

oh....wait..

Platapus 06-06-08 05:51 PM

This is why criminals prefer unarmed citizens.

Even though this was clearly self-defense, my sympathies to the home owner and his family. This is not a pleasant thing to go through.

This sends a clear and loud message to criminals!

"Shoot first".

He already planned on it. He didn't get the chance. I'd say there was a 99% chance this family would have been murdered, of course after the women had been raped first.

Wake up from your fantasy land already and quit being scared at life. People want to hurt you in this world for no reason. Deal with it.

The armed intruder kicked in the door to a bedroom. I'd have to say you're right Subman.

I take it your insinuating to criminals that they'd better start killing or be killed, .... as if they weren't already doing so.

Im not sure if this is a cultural difference, or your philsophical thoughts are derived from a sheltered life, but, its common knowledge around here in the US: You don't break into peoples houses.

A persons home has some sanctity to it, you don't enter unless invited. Period.

The only debate i ever see in this subject, is what firearm to use for home defense. I prefer a pump action shotgun. :rotfl:

We actually had an incident here in Utah that pulled a funny reverse on one of those comments. Some years ago a thug broke into the home of an elderly couple late at night, hit the old man over the head and started to go through the jewelry box. When the old woman screamed he went back to the bed and started to strangle her. Scrabbling at his chest and stomach she suddenly realised that - you guessed it - he had a gun stuck in his belt. I shouldn't have to explain what happened next.

In this case the baddie might have been better off if he hadn't had a gun.:rotfl:

The article did not mention what type of rifle the home owner had. There are some rifles that are not so appropriate for home defense (over penetration). Probably would not choose a Remington 700 for home defense unless you have a VERY long hallway :)

Shotguns are usually a good choice although some may be too ungainly to maneuver in tight quarters. But you can't argue about the result. Even if you miss the noise will stun the intruder. And the nice thing is that it is more difficult to miss with a shotgun than it is with a handgun.

One thing I do recommend is that if anyone keeps a shotgun for protection that they hit the range with it. Shotguns are not like big rifles and believe it or not, it IS possible to miss a human size target at 7 meters (seen it in our indoor range :yep: )

You don't want the first time you fire a shotgun to be the time you might need two shots quickly.

I am pondering a question concerning my shotgun (old Remington 12ga pump). Right now I have two pistol grips on it. Makes the recoil a bit harsh but makes it easier to maneuver. I am contemplating upgrading to a top folding stock. I have never used one before. I am not sure the folding stock will give me the stability of a fixed stock. If not, then I wonder if I am still better off with my two pistol grips?
