danlisa 04-02-08 05:10 AM

You like what you like. Simple really.

However, get ready for a sh*t load of replies saying:

"SH4 is better than SH3 ever was at the same time"
"Both are equally good, play both"
"Mods make the game a lot better"

Etc etc......blah blah.:shifty:

Is there some kind of hidden forum reward for 'sitting on the fence' in this matter?

You do realise that SHIV is in way better shape than SHIII was when it was released? Besides, in their own way, they are both good games. Wait for a while and you'll see the mods kick in and make the game better. :smug:

@ Dowly

Are you running for a Subsim Moderators position?

Rofl! That'd mean 20yrs in the galley and another 20yrs of washing Neal's car. :rotfl:

EDIT: Oh and I'd have to cure cancer, then Neal MIGHT give me some deserted outpost to look after. :D

The only positive thing you can construe from that post is that its an ode to how good GWX and the work that went into SH3. I for one still play both and I beg in equal amounts that 'this facet' was included in 'that game' and so on.

personally the atmosphere in SH3 is something i would like in SH4 and i think that is sheerly a personal thing (thats shared commonly :D ) remember SH3 before the tool mods? OUCH!

Very true. I personally hate war games with bright colors. Tho, of course it's the Pacific, but still, even during the storms it looks too colorful. Let's take for example Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers series. Everything you see have been gone through 50%-75% de-saturating filter and it works. The places in the movies look like cold, dirty and sad.

Try This

Starlion-Don't give up on SH4 yet. By your posting, you indicate you've only played it for a day. Have you added the Run Silent Run Deep and Trigger Maru Mods? Those two mods improve the experience considerably. Also, remember that the War in the Atlantic and War in the Pacific are different. That doesn't mean that SH4 is inferior, it just means that it is modeling a different war.

Post-processing filter anyone? It isn't in SH4 for nothing you know

edit: Nvm, I just saw your post at the SH4 mods forum

Haven't picked up SHIV yet. Maybe someday when it gets better.

I predict you'll purchase it sooner rather than later http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...ies/pirate.gif

OK we have had this very same discussion here lots of times, and in the end the result is also always the same: Some people like it, some don't, each has his own reasons. So please stop trashing SH4, SH3 or any other game, if you didn't like it you have the right to do so -you payed for it- and maybe somewhen you change your mind or not.

That's all folks....

jpm1 04-02-08 03:13 PM

personnaly i'll purchased it even if i don't play it for the reason numbered above

CptGrayWolf 04-02-08 03:14 PM

I still enjoy 1985's Silent Service. So I doubt I will be so disapointed by SHIV, whenever I get my hands on it.
Unless somebody is going to tell me Silent Service is a better game?

World War Two was a big war fought in a lot of different geography. I remember when playing tank minatures there was a lot of theater preference with the participants. Some prefered the grim austerity of the eastern front. Some, the shimmering deserts of Libya and Egypt. Some the great Allied landings and liberation in the west. It doesn't surprise that the same thing happens at sea with the subs.

I just feel lucky that I like both the Atlantic and the Pacific. :-j

With SH4 retailing so cheaply compared to its MSRP of $49.99 when it was first released, for those interested, it's worth a shot just to check it out.

Some of the modders have gotten burned out or bored with SH3 while others are simply intrigued with new opportunities presented by modding SH4 and its Pacific u-boat campaigns add-on (It's too small to really call it an expansion).

There will still be others left to carry on in their stead, at least for a time, but all things must end and that comes very swiftly indeed with computer games when their popularity is typically just a couple of years before fading away.

A thriving mod community can grant a temporary stay on that end but five years is the longest I've ever seen any game last before being winnowed down to just a core of die-hard fans.

My system barely meets the specs to even run SH4 and I very much doubt that situation will change anytime soon.

Besides, I like the whole "Das Bootiness" of SH3 and the war for the Atlantic has a certain quality akin to the sagas of the old Viking eddas. The lone island of the Bretons standing against the barbarian might of the Teutons, and all that. Very mythic, old-world stuff.

If it weren't for SH3, I'd probably be flying with the 8th Air Force over Europe, flying formation with the other B-17s.
