[REQ] skin for german uboat (1.5)

I dont know about you... but my 1.5 stock uboat seem that come out from scrapyard ... most black/grey with few white/light-grey panels... in one simple word... ugly!

I look forward for a new paint to my uboat... is there one "flying" around? Cheers

kapitan_zur_see 03-09-08 04:59 AM

I totally agree lol
I believe we'll have to wait for foobor's new skin ;)

That's probably the coating texture he's complaining about.

Yeah! You are right!

I've just started a new campain to see if was a coating texture... and yes it is...

Without coating the sub looks better ... with coating it turns ugly mex

Ugly and stealthy is better than pretty and pounded to death with depth charges:arrgh!:

The U-boat skins, as opposed to the American ones, actually look really good and refined. The latter look like rust buckets that have been mothballed for the past 20 years.

kapitan_zur_see 03-10-08 07:35 AM

Don't know for coating, i've just started a campaign with uboat so no coating so far...

I'm trying myself at skinning the IXd2, but i like texture to be weathered to some extent. While it could be considered less realistic, it makes up for more eye candy.

Ducimus 03-10-08 04:52 PM

I must be one of the few people who prefers his boat to have that "weathered veteran" look. :D

jimbob 03-10-08 07:25 PM

Had to give it a go and I'd say it aint easy:

You bet! me too :smug: i'm totally with you 100% lol
I hate when it's almost plain gray. It doesn't put hires textures to stand in the crowd. You need lots of little details to "better mimic" mother nature

kiwi_2005 03-11-08 11:05 AM

Yea im the same i like the weathered look, i seen a photo of a IXC Uboat taken in 1945 surrendering to US and it looked like a total rust bucket -rusty orange & black, it was not at all flash looking. But somehow it still remained sexy:lol:

Got my improved coating last night, went out on patrol this morning, good lord this thing is ugly! :) i like it :arrgh!:

andycaccia 03-12-08 03:03 PM

I think real U boat remained "new and polished" for a very short time...with salt water and DC...

:/\\x: rust everywhere:nope:

M. Sarsfield 03-12-08 03:06 PM

Even fleet boats had the weathered look from some b&w photos that I've seen. You would see chunks of paint missing and a little rust.

DS 03-14-08 02:15 PM

Yeah, I think boats on both sides tended to look clean and trim with new paint when starting a patrol, but after a month or two of salt water, sun, rain, ice, and depth charges, they would come back looking pretty rough. It is likely that towards the end of the war, the Kriegsmarine was putting boats out without full maintanence and painting due to shortages and deployment pressures.

Sizzolo 03-14-08 04:20 PM

Hiya Thyro!
I'm actually working on new skins from the ground up.

For progress see http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=132890

All schemes will be available in clean or rustbucket style. The pics I posted earlier today (14th) show the 'just launched' (nice and clean) skin. I'll let you know when there's something final - hoping for sunday-ish (not sure which sunday...might be this sunday...might be a sunday in August 2009 sometime!)

Cheers,
Sizz.

kapitan_zur_see 03-14-08 08:02 PM

Working on that too lol :rotfl:
So you're going to get plenty for your liking :arrgh!:
