President Bush talks about bringing democracy to Cuba now that Fidel is standing down. But to be honest, when I was in Cuba a couple of years ago the Cuban people treated Castro as some kind of god and hated any kind of American interference. OK you could say that over the years the Cuban people have been indoctrinated somewhat, but equally American actions over the same period haven't helped to promote democracy in Cuba.

The Flordia Yachtmen would disagree with you. And Castro welcomed them with open arms.

If he didn't stand down he probably would have fallen down. ;)

What's the record for longest time in power for a leader? At 49 years, Castro must be near it.

I love the irony. All the years the US tried to take him down and then he retires due to ill health.

Boris 02-19-08 08:37 AM

Well it was bound to happen, people only get older. :yep:

Personally I have a lot of respect for Castro, for a communist leader he was a pretty good one.

Marcantilan 02-19-08 10:05 AM

Really good news, another dictator retires.

Sadly, Raul Castro (Fidel´s brother) is in the succession list...

I don't think Queen Liz is going to hand over the crown to Chalie Big ears untill she's on her deathbed, even then they will have to pry the crown out of her hands!

Don't think he'll be in the job for long, he's only a couple of years younger than Fidel.
