On my 1st patrol out of Kiel in a IIA I headed to AN21. Got the 50% message just as I spotted a small freighter. Went ahead and sank it, but not enough fuel to make it back to Kiel. Headed for Heligoland. Got to 50km out and ran out of fuel. Went to periscope depth and went the rest of the way on electric motors. Made it! :D

i have had it get close before.. but not as close as actually runing out!

I always leave (when far far away from home) fuel for extra 1000km for the trip home.

Time to get the sails out!

I prefer boarding a tanker, getting a very long and big hose and let Bernard suck the diesel to our boat, as he can suck golfballs through gardenhoses :arrgh!:

This was done IRL.
All subs had a back up mast and sail and they where occasionaly used. ;)

Iv'e never ran out of Deisel on any U-boat, as Im always careful with fuel consumption.

You could always tie Bernard to the front of the U-boat, and get him to swim you home.

If all else fails.....there's always the teleport option :lol:

Yeah, the llA & D boats (my favorites) are a real challenge fuel wise. I always made it back, but then I ran "fuel cautious" right from the pier.
I made it round trip from Kiel to Trondheim, Norway. I spent a lot of time running at 2kts submerged & then Up to charge & back down to run at 2kts, but it was a successful patrol. It just took a lot of time...

The most fuel efficient speed in the type II's without an engine upgrade is 6 knots.:up:

When in a TypeII....tis best to dock with a milch cow as you leave your home port :lol:

Now that I'm at Heligoland, I have the opportunity for badges. How should I apply these? And how do I do this? I need machinists big time. Any advice is very welcome.

Even though I`m pretty fuel conservative, I try to keep the Milch cows, and supply vessels fairly close at hand.:up:

I have often thought of docking at Cuxhaven for re-supply after going through the Kiel canal before heading out into the north sea. So far I havent. But if I am economic with the fuel traveling between 4/6 knots depending on the weather I can normally stay out for upto 12 days. Docking at Cuxhaven would increase this by a further two.

As it is when I return, instead of returning to my home port of Kiel I instead dock either at Willhelmshaven, Cuxhaven or Brunsbuttel for re-supply then going back out again only returning back to Kiel through the canal after three patrols. That way I would have been at sea for about a month before being given leave.

Re-supplying at another port using SH3 Commander has really improved my game a great deal, for me it is a must have!!

Trondheim would be a tall order I think in a type IIb, great job at achieving it! :up:

Yes I agree with you, It could also leave you exposed if you come across something nasty with depth charges or guns on it!! :lol:

As far as I remember recharging batteries doesn't consume any diesel fuel, unfortunately. Thus going underwater can in fact rise your maximum range and is useful when out of diesiel. But I try hard not to abuse that.

WaW, IIA, got from Kiel to area near scapa flow, sank 3 tankers and sailed all the way back, still had 1/10 fuel left ;)

trick is to sail at ahead slow all the way :D

(btw, the lines next to the fuel indicator are each 5%, like 5, 10, 15, etc etc)
