Star Shell in GWX
I modified modestly my basic.cfg file to allow my VIIB boat to load 20 star shells They show up in the deck gun ammo screen but I cannot seem to load them. Only the HE is shown when I try to load the DG. Any help appreciated.
Running GWX on SH3. |
What are ye gonna shoot with 'em, starfish? :hmm:

My target will be U-57:doh:

Can't say I've tried to add star shells to my ammo locker. They tend to give your position away.

I have never bothered with star shells, even with stock SH3. Only good they are for is making pretty patterns in the sky, when you on long patrols.

To John O: This thread has all the info you need to actually modify the ammo loadout: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...ht=shell+slots |

I've tried the various mods to the basic.cfg file and I have the various 88/105 DG (AP/SS) ammo on the I screen for the type VII boats but the actual DG screen only displays the HE icon. Thus, the only ammo that can be loaded is the HE. Know GWX removed the SS and AP DG ammo capability for realism/historical reasons. I support that and thats why I play GWX. But, one dark night, after wasting many ranging HE rounds on a very small target not worthy of a torp, I wished for just one SS. Now that we have all the laughs out of the way, can the DG screen be modified to allow for loading the AP/SS ammo when they are present in the I screen in GWX? Is there something other than the Basic.cfg file that needs to be modified in GWX? Thanks again for the help so far. |

Very interesting.
i found really anoying donīt have any starshell in my ixb boat during my last drumbeat patrol. I wanted to identify if the single ships have any deck gun without using external camera but unfortunatelly my crew forget the shells in port. :damn: i think that modify the number of shells in 10 or 20 more could be possible in the real world. iīve just read a book about a british submarine, and they carry extra deck gun ammo because they expect a heavy gun action in his patrol zone. The ammo was stored and scattered in other places of the boat |

In terms of what a boat or ship is designed for, and what a skipper carried, I don't think any game could model the variety in the real world.
My father served on Canadian River Class frigates. They would put to sea out of Halifax or St. John's with far more then the designed DC capacity called for. Basically, they would stow extra DC's anywhere onboard, as long as they were accessible to be manhandled into position for use (designed stowage was for about 200 DC's, but they would often sail out with convoys with as many as 300 or more DCs stuffed on board). An uncle of mine was on a Royal Navy minesweeper in the channel - they used to snag (steal is such an ugly word, so we won't use it) army BREN guns and .303 ammo to augment their AA fire. It seems especially in small ships and subs, captains improvised as they could to augment their vessels fighting capacity. |

On the other hand, ammunition stowage on a sub is at a premium. Every starshell is one less real one when you need it.:dead:
