AWAITING ORDERS CAPTAIN: Should we stay or should we go now...

The ol' question....

It's a foggy night, you've snuck into a harbor, put a few fish in a docked Tanker.

She's taking water over the working deck, a sinking is inevitable (you hope) but you have not gotten credit for the sinking yet.

You are loading more fish, but it will be awhile before they are ready.

A destroyer is sitting idle waiting about 1500 yards off launching star shells and counting fish with thier spot light. Another DD is circling like a shark, blocking the straight. See Bungo Pete for more.

Do you:

A) Find a deep 'divet' in the harbor and wait till your fish are ready

B) Make your escape before the clouds clear and the sun rises

Bonus:

Will the Tanker eventually sink, awarding you credit?

The rest is up to you Captain!

I just did this myself not too long ago. I put a total of 6 fish into a tanker before she sank. Anything more then 3 fish is an investment, i had to make sure he went down.

CaptainHaplo 07-29-07 05:14 PM

Well... I am gonna say none of the above - if I have time to load another fish - I have time to pump a few shells into the beast as insurance and then haul the mail to a safe location.... Yes - I know its not the safest thing I could do - but the way I see it, the enemy already knows I am around so making a bit more noise wont matter. If I can help the bugger sink after a few shells - then the risk was worth it. If not - well - getting caught in a harbor is ugly no matter what. If I have gotten this far, and leave - I risked the crew's lives for what? Secure the deal, then run for home - but the fastest way to do it is a few more holes at the waterline.

Me no do harbor raids.

Ducimus 07-29-07 05:32 PM

I do them, occasionaly. but only when the risk to my own boat is fairly low. Im pretty sure harbor raids was a far more common occurance in the pacific in compairison to that atlantic. Besides bowfins battleflag which sports a pier and a bus, heres a persiscope picture from the USS Seawolf.

Their fun, but.... not always what its cracked up to be.

Large docked tankers/freighters in stock SH IV need up to 6-7 torps before they sink. Not worth the trouble.

Snuffy 07-29-07 08:04 PM

If I gots capital ships nearby ... especially sitting idle .. as in ducks, I take it out too! :know:

As for the DD circleing ... he'd be next.

I won't surface in the sight of ships that might have a good chance of blowin me outta the water when my intent it to stay in the water. ;)

FAdmiral 07-29-07 09:53 PM

I stay in DEEP water, that shallow stuff is for the birds....

How not to win

Get one tube loaded

Swing the boat around and head out

Emergency surface at flank, man the deck gun and blast away

Line up on the charging DD, dive and fire that torpedo....

Keep sheling the DD's bow to hoepfully destroy the Forward Gun

Run like hell and steer to one side and get out to deep water

:rotfl:

Watch as they tear you apart...:dead:

Make a stealthy escape, but hit her with a couple of stern launched torps on the way out.

Not enough data to know whether those stern tubes are available. With six forward torpedo tubes and "a few torpedoes" in the docked ship, why do you have to wait anyway. Don't tell me you came into the harbor without all tubes loaded. If you did, might as well just slink out of there. You already made your fatal mistake and you're only allowed one.

Capt. Shark Bait 07-30-07 02:16 PM

none of the above as well. i'ld go after the DDs after all tubes are reloaded then finish off the tanker:ping:

Admiral Lockwood would have some unpleasant words with you after the cruise. You might be captain of a desk afterwards. But your sphincter muscles will be well exercised. :o

I have noticed on harbor raids some ships are a real swine to sink I forget the type of the last one I had this with, anyway I fired every MK14 in to her and no joy I fired off all my deck gun shells and still no joy. The ship was half sunk burning away like there was no tomorrow and still the swine lived, I was thinking about ramming the swine but changed my mind on that one.

What I need is a nuclear torp  that may do the job.

Zayphod 07-31-07 11:02 AM

I remember doing this in the old DOS version of SH 1 (sneaking into a harbor and surprising the harbor police).

Never took more than 4 torpedos to sink anythng, and there was always that annoying patrol boat to mess up a perfect shot. I'm assuming things have gotten a tad harder in this version (which I haven't played yet).

I voted I'd get out of dodge before the smoke cleared, but that it would take another fish to sink the target (based on the responses already in this thread).

That other fish would be shot from the stern tube as a farewell to the harbor entities while I'd be making sure we live to hunt another day.

BTW, I can't wait to play this.

Off to Norway on holiday - Thanks for the participating in the poll!

I raided a harbor with two AC carriers at anchor once.

One of them sank but hit bottom before she 'went under' no credit

The other one BTW went up with one ! torpedo :o
