naval acadamy - flak artillery test?
Ive had sh3 since launch but until now havent really bothered with the whole naval academy bit... thinking this should be a breeze having already had many successful careers i dived right in... and well now im stuck!
Things were going well until i got to the flak artillery test, how on earth does anyone survive this??? After a few minutes even with some frantic manouvering i still end up with most of my flak crew dead and a sinking boat- this is just too hard, with the whole point of the excercise being to shoot down the planes is seems a bit silly that the only way to even survive is to dive and hide until the planes get bored and go away. has anyone else managed to complete this test... if so how is it done? -ive survived to the end of the war in my career and never faced andyhing this darn hard! |
For the sake of a few hundred renown starting points...why not just skip it and get straight into a career ? :hmm:
|
I did all the training missions before starting to play "for real". I don't remember the enemy aircraft shooting at us at all, but it's been a while since I did it.
|
Since this is merely training, and the "reward" is a few hundred renown points, put the difficulty level to 0%. Once you've completed all the training scenarios, then you can increase your realism settings to whatever you want!
I don't recall the planes shooting at me. dropping bombs or anything else, all the times I went in there just to pass some time. Nor do I remember taking any damage to my sub. That would be like deck gun practice where the targets shoot back and try to sink you. :lurk: |
I had the planes shooting at me several times, I could hear the bullets plinking in to the tower, but they never inflicted any damage and certainly no casuallities among the crew, that's some strange training there.
I just run at flank speed straight ahead and have my guys shoot the planes. If I do the shooting myself I can probably get some Swordfishes but can forget the faster Hurricanes, manning the AA gun is not my job as Kaleun anyway. |
I remember it being a bitch to shoot down the airplanes. But don't remember the airplanes doing any shooting or bombing. :o
|
I had a hell of a time trying to shoot them down too; mouse control too sensitive and jerky.
Out of frustration, I assigned the task to a crewmember who shot them all down in fairly quick order. |
ahh, problem solved, well sort of, its NYGM2.4s fault, as it gives planes the ability to use their cannons/machine guns which they didnt in stock sh3, which explains why i get shot to pieces!
nevermind, ive gotten back into to my career anyway so i`ll just have to live without completing the academy bit. |
Oh, yeah, I forgot. Do the acadamy before you install any mods; ships are much harder to sink after and planes can shoot back.
Or alternately, go into the proper file and just give yourself 1500 renown. Do I remember which is the proper file, after almost a year of not playing? Of course not; but I know there is one. |

Worst ever
I have done the Flak training several times on different mulitloads but my GWX2 trial was murder. I normally avoid one or two planes shooting at me but ten...
I tried editing the .log file but the scores wouldn't take until I went into the course and then bailed out. I could then go into the .log and edit the score. When I went back into the game I had Excelent results. I still can't get it to give me the renoun for any of the courses. I even tried editing the .cfg for my current career. I guess the teacher wasn't to keen on me trying to skip class. |
Ive done all the academy again since installing GWX 2.0 and ive found it a lot more realistic and challenging, as regards to the flak exam, engage all closing targets close range, close up your damage control team and have plenty of reserve flak gunners at the ready, as long as you keep on top of repairs you should achieve an excellent pass mark.

the planes will not attack you in stock SH3.
in GWX this is another matter, the planes are fully armed and ready to kill you even in the training mission. the main problem with the mission is probably not that it is more difficult than the previous version of GWX, but i think the vulnerability of the gun crews have been increased. FACT: if you are one little flesh and blood man holding onto a rocking and pitching AA gun on a u-boat aiming at a speeding aircraft some of which have 4 to 6 machine guns ranging from 30 to 50 caliber as well as at least one or two 20 mm cannons all shooting at you at once.... you are facing a firing squad that will win 99.9% of the time. a ww2 fighter aircraft is little more than a machine gun platform, and most types are increadibly resistant to damage. unless you got lucky and hit a fuel line, or oil line, or a pat of the cooling system (assuming its a liquid cooled engine) most of these planes will soak up a great deal of lead and keep going. to put it simply... your average u-boat had one or two men who are made of soft and spongy flesh, firing a couple of machine guns at at a large armored aircraft which is firing several machine guns and cannons. AA guns were placed on U-boats for little more purpose than to bolster the securities and the feeling of well being and invincibility they lended (falsely) to impressionable 17, 18, and 19 year old boys. Just for example... The P-47 (which is not modeled in the game) could place 13 lbs of lead on a target for every second the pilot held down the trigger. im confident that the numbers are similar most any fighter aircraft. if you happen to be standing in the crosshairs of such an aircraft - forget it - for you, the war... and everything else for that matter... is over, i have complete confidence that a straffing aircraft would be firing at you for up to 5-7 seconds during his straffing run, that equates to anywhere from 65 - 91 lbs of lead landing all around (and on) your little man at a rate of about 3,000 feet per second. small bleeding holes like the ones seen in Das Boot are of the least of your worries, more likley you would have various bodily matter (including urine and feces) all over the deck. if the crew bothered to bring the man below, he would probably be missing limbs, or be completely disemboweled by such a lethal hail of gunfire (assuming it was focused on the conning tower) |
:o:o:o:o OW!
|
I have the stock version and they don't attack
|
to make a long story short...
i think in the stock version it was determined that some aircraft were not attacking even in the campaing. GWX dev team modified some files that resulted in all aircraft attacking, even in the training mission. can a GWX dev confirm? |
