Picked up SH4

...after much deliberation, I went and picked up my copy of SH4. Looks great, feels great, killed a few merchants. Patched to 1.1.

But, ive played it twice, and both times its crashed to desktop for no apparent reason. Great start!:roll:

Good to hear you got around to getting the game at last. I also get random CTD. I had two last night. The save function is invaluable.

Kant Schwimm 04-14-07 04:19 PM

Stick with it matey all will come good ;)
You wasnt pressing the A key was you? :hmm:

CCIP 04-14-07 04:28 PM

I never had any random CTDs with SHIV, those I had were usually for that or other known/reported reason :hmm:)

NefariousKoel 04-14-07 04:29 PM

Don't press the 'A' key.

Sometimes the stadimeter will make you ctd. I save after leaving harbor (or starting outside it) and reload my game from there. It helped when my Stadi kept crashing me on a certain target.

If you have an LCD flat panel monitor, you must manually change the synchronization setting in a cfg file to 'on'. I'm not home right now, so if you do I'll give you details on where it is located...

I think it's My Documents/SH4/Cfg/main.cfg under [Graphics] section but I could be wrong

BlackSpot 04-14-07 04:35 PM

I've tried changing VSync to on. I've tried Neals suggestion of reinstalling but the CTD is still there. One example last night I was shadowing a mechant, trying to get a good postion. Viewing it through the TBT, bincoulars etc, etc. I get a bit closer, have another look though the binoculars and BAM! CTD!:o

Yep (CAT 7.3) and sound.:D

Kadota 04-14-07 05:46 PM

I have a Radeon 1650 Pro using Cat 7.3 and I get random CTD's too, and sometimes an automatic reboot too. I save often.

NefariousKoel 04-15-07 01:00 AM

ATI problems?

Have you completely wiped the ATI drivers and installed the newest one?

I kinda doubt this is the problem but had to mention it. *shrug*

I'm beginning to think there's a graphics option that doesn't work well with ATI cards. I could be wrong, so we should see how other ATI users are faring.

Anyone else out there with ATI vid cards having issues or running smoothly? Let us know.

BlackSpot 04-15-07 04:50 AM

The only graphics issue I'm aware of is, which was mentioned a while back, is the sun glare not working properly.

ATI x1800xt
AMD 62 X2 4800+
4 gig RAM
Creative X-FI
Win XP

You picked up SH4? Who dropped it?:p

Rilder 04-15-07 05:17 AM

I'm running 6.9 cat drivers(been to lazy to update and they were on my driver cd) and I haven't had any problems. (x1950)

AVGWarhawk 04-15-07 06:45 AM

I have the ATI X1300 and the new 7.3. I have had three CTD. "A" key, stadimeter once and one because my kids had downloaded Sponge Bob games all day, cleaned them out/defrag...no CTD since. Smooth sailing ever since.

I'm thinking background program or virus program perhaps causing it:hmm:

BlackSpot 04-15-07 09:46 AM

It's possible it's another program, Hawk. The CTD seem VERY random though. I'm not a huge buyer of games, the last one was BF2142, which I've played online A LOT. Never has it CTD. In fact I can't remember any game I've bought in the last few years that has had this problem.

OddjobXL 04-15-07 09:55 AM

I've got an GeForce Go 7950 GTX card in my new XPS laptop. I know it's not supported but this is the standard loadout for what's likely going to be one of the most popular gaming PCs in America to judge, at least, from the heavy promotional campaign it's getting. SHIII has been rock solid. I've also played Rome: Total War and Il-2: 1946 with no issues.

I got what seemed to be a very random CTD as I was panning around a cinematic view during a night battle. Back before 1.1 SH4 seemed even more unstable but I'd had my hopes up things were fixed. But, as much as it genuinely pains me, I can't bring myself to start a campaign right now. Silent Hunter is a time consuming game to play, and it has to be to do what it does so well, but that's time I just can't sink into something that's going to *poof* on me after hours of hard-won victories.

I really do love SH4 and I hope they get this stuff straightened out. If anyone has any suggetions, I'm all ears. And, yes, I have enabled the v-sync.

I've never been one to update my drivers, but I did for this one and it made a world of difference...

I haven't had CTD until recently. Now, they are quite frequent and is making for a frustrating gaming experience. For example, just now....hit the "A" = maintain depth key and immediately went to desk top, did not pass go or collect my $200. Total BS..!!

You are exactly right.....Too much time is needed to fully exploit the campaign mode and to have it vaporize is frustrating beyond words. I think I'm going to have to shelve this game till they get thier arms around it. Very disappointing to say the least.
