The Honour of deck guns...
Am I not the only person who loves engaging targets with a deck gun where ever reasonably possible? In my mind there is no better way to add to your tonnage using the good 'ole weapon..
When the weather works with you (a rarity, I know) you can rack up a quite impressive patrol tonnage when added to your torpedo kills. Whats the most tonnage anyones sank with a deck gun? |
I totally agree.
One patrol, over the course of a couple of days of great weather, i came upon 5 small merchants and sank them with the deck gun. Great fun! |
Yup i like taking merchants Out with My deck gun and when i want a luahg my AA guns
|
the best is when you aim at their cargo after peppering the waterline with shots, and a giant fireball shoots up into the sky!!! Man I love that....:sunny:

I love using the deck gun. In my current career though I used a Type II for my first 16 patrols. Now that I've got a Type VII I rarely find unescorted targets to use my deck gun on. Radar is just coming out and it's making any kind of surface attack suicidal. I'll probably keep installed so I can hurt stragglers though I guess.
Here's a question. If I remove my deck gun using SH3C does it improve my underwater performance? If so it might be coming off rather soon. ________ BeautifullNightmare |
I think we've all forgotten the noble sport of "Funnel Skittles" too :D

Great fun to do with AA guns:up:

I have sank Elco Torpedo boats with the Flak gun but I never had
any luck with merchants. My only 100k patrol I had was in a type IX and I sailed back to base completely out of torpedos and deck gun ammo. This was pre GWX. :D |

I took out a medium merchant with my AA guns last night had ran out of Deck gun ammo and eels so had to rely on the AA guns and i made it sink it took me bloody ages but it worked:yep:

On my previous patrol sank a small freighter with 4 rounds--satisfying :smug:

IXBs 37mm will punch holes in most things I've found, even the largest tankers.
But, being 37mm, it's not a very big hole, but gives you something to do between 105 reloads :) |
Yup, love the deck guns. Actually had four straight days of good weather - I mean water like glass - off the coast of Ireland in October 1940. Unreal. Lots of tonnage.
But I never use the deck gun during the day, and I never engage warships with it (unless I'm about to die anyway, and it's the whole "and for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee" thing.) |
Ive managed to take out a few DD's at extreme range with my 105 becous ei have a really good gun crew and a brilliant boat the trusty u-111 IXB all the way:up:

Yup, I love my deck gun, too! I also like raking fishing vessels and other small craft with my AA until blood runs from the scuppers. Great fun!

Using my 37mm flack gun when I had Stock Sh3 I could sink coastal and small merchants. GWX means its deck or nothing.
In Stock Sh3 I have sunk around 100,000 with the deck gun alone (there use to be a place where unescorted liners would come through like clock work in a two year time frame. GWX I have sunk 36,000 with the deck gun, but as the years pass (i'm into 1943) the deck gun is getting less and less use. |
My Dad once after getting fustrated with torpedo missings surfaced and duked a Flower Corvy with his deck gun, I was calling him an idiot the whole time but he killed the bugger, He rammed it once or twice too, (you know the whole sliding along the side and waving to the crew on the ship while you slide by rammings) :p

Yes, many people have mentioned the deck gun as very satisfying since it makes you feel like a pirate praying on the weak and lone merchants :arrgh!:
