depth charges

I would like to know if it would be a difference in the way depth charge explosions are modeled inside the sub. Besides the swing left and righ we see now in SH3, it would be cool and (more real? ) to have a sudden shake when the explosion is very near as we see in movies, maybe some blur in your vision too. At least for me it would be more scary and inmersive in the terrorific moments a sub is being depth charged. (sorry for my English)

Some of the photographs Gunther Lothar Bucheim took aboard the U-96 during a depth charge attack are blurred and shakey. Did make events look a lot more compelling.

Of course, he may have been shaking in his boots ;) .

I would also like to see more depth control/shoving-to-the-side caused by depth charges. It would be a plus but not a sim killer if it isn't included.

Well you would hope with this being a sequel they would make improvements to various parts of the game such as depth charges rather than saying, "Hey, here's SH3 in the pacific with some better looking water".

I'm confident they improved a lot of the game, but I am worried that it's not going to be the same jump from in quality from 3 to 4 and as it was from 2 to 3.

Depends on what you mean by quality. Otherwise it's unfair to expect given that unlike 2 and 3, 3 and 4 share the same engine, even if massively improved.

Perhaps not, though an improvement nonetheless. SH4 strikes me more of an evolution than revolution, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I hope SH4 will be a successful project for Ubi, and based on that success -- they take their time and engineer a whole new engine for SHx.

It would be nice if depth charges could affect your depth by a few meter, like they were reported to. Also a bit of debris would be a nice touch.

you can try it in sh3 with depth charges shake mod.

Not to go off topic, but where could one find those pictures?

trenken 02-25-07 04:44 PM

If you saw the movie Das Boot, he's the journalist that was brought aboard. After the patrol, he wrote a book in which it had many of the pictures he took. You can still order this book, but im not sure if the pictures are actually on the web. He also wrote the book in 1975 that the movie was based on.

He actually died 3 days ago.

We all know this, but why is it on the "Depth-Charges" thread?

hyperion2206 02-25-07 06:05 PM

Steve, you found out that the Japanese had only 2 different depth settings for their depth charges, right? I wonder if they modeled it. I don't believe it because it would make the game far to easy. But if we want 100% realism (realistic torpedo duds) then we should want/get realistic depth settings.:yep:

Torplexed 02-25-07 06:08 PM

Here are some of the Bucheim photos Trenken mentioned. That's Captain Lehmann-Willenbrock in the foreground on whom the captain in Das Boot is loosely based. Bucheim says the commotion from this attack damaged the shutter on his camera.

Because if you read through the entire thread someone brought up pictures that he took while being depth charged, and then someone asked where you could see these photos, and then I responded.

Sailor Steve 02-25-07 06:44 PM

Okay, okay! I'm in a cranky mood today!

Sorry.

Camaero 02-25-07 09:05 PM

Thanks for the pictures! Hadn't seen those before.

Sorry for moving things off topic.

Hartmann 02-25-07 09:11 PM

Only 2 different depth settings for depth charges ???

very difficult chase a submarine with this limitation. :hmm:

Barkhorn1x 02-26-07 09:12 AM

I have the Bruckheim book and there are some really excellent photo's in there. In the forward the author states that he had packed these rolls of film away and found them years later. Glad that he did.***

***Sailor Steve - don't get mad at me for hikjacking the thread. ;)

Barkhorn.

Found an old WW2 video of depth charges being dropped, but couldn't find anything from the inside of a sub..

I´m sure the man behind the camera had better things to do when under attack than filming it. ;)
