Alex's damage textures

Hi all !

Well, the goal of this "mod" is, as you can see, to add some details like paint, rust, and elements in the interior of ships. That's really a kind of never-ending work : I always find new colors and textures that would be cool to see after a torpedo impact.... So I'll probably do lots and lots of those things. :D

Link to my download page : http://hosted.filefront.com/PanzerKamerad

My first one :

For those of you who would like to download that, Filefront seems to have a problem now, but don't worry, links will be ready soon....

Will await the link and give it a try :arrgh!:
BTW...FF seems to be behaving itself at the moment. :D

Here is the link to download them. ;) (removed)

Danke

Are you still colaborating with Ocean Blue on these textures? Seems you two were making some headway together on it. BTW, they look great.

Alex 02-23-07 10:15 AM

We've never been "collaborating", really, cause this skeleton modelisation will probably always stay a WIP, unfortunately.... But you're right, that would be a good thing : if we share our ideas, then we'll give you the best of ourselves on this damage texturing project.

AVGWarhawk 02-23-07 10:19 AM

I liked the one with the skeleton look to it. What happened with that?

Alex 02-23-07 11:56 AM

Nothing.... I just tried to make it look as good as I can, hoping somebody skillful come and give me the solution on how to implement it in the good way on the ships (to make it appear realistically on them), but it seems not to be doable. What is a damage texture ? Simply a hole texture with some details on it. When there is a torpedo impact the game simply paste the texture on the ship where the torpedo hits the hull.... Here you can see the problem :

This part of the skeleton is made to appear BELOW the hull.... And unfortunately it's not possible to model the whole skeleton, the same texture appears wherever the torpedo hits the ship....

That's the reason why this will probably stay a WIP.

Bummer:cry:

Let's cross fingers, hoping it will be possible to take the interior's ship modelisation from SH4 ! ;):arrgh!:

This is looking great but i have one improtant critisism.

The center colour of the actual holes should be 100% pure black, and 100% opaque,
Other wise they end up looking too 'painted on' in certain light, the third pic is a good example of this.

Also when the textures overlap it will look better too. Again in look at the stern of the ship in the third pic, the textures are too light or translucent, and its only pure black where they overlap eachother.

Do this - and im sure the results will be even better than they already are, great job, serveral people have had a crack improving damage textures in the past, but no one has come close to anything this good (that im aware of.)

Im a 3dSmax user and thought of remoddling and re skinning all of SH3s ship to accomadate SH4s visible damage model make me do this......

Thanks JU_88, and about the criticism, thank you very much for sharing your opinion. You're absolutely right, mate.... I thought colours that I added were good (well, it adds a bit of eye candy) but it seems to be too much.... I'll try to make it look better in the future. Again, thanks a bunch ! ;)
And about re-moddling and re-skinning all ships in SH3, it will probably take a long time ( !).... But if you can do it someday, you're the man, Mr JU  .

Guys, I'm pleased to present you this one, that looks especially good for the deck gun damage. A torpedo damage picture will come later, this is a work in progress.... Hopefully this one will look better than the older ones.

It's looking great Alex,
I'm using OB's mod at the moment but i'm waiting for your final version eagerly.
Cheerio.

Alex 02-24-07 07:08 PM

;) hehe....
As you can see, the texture is still translucent, I don't like it that way.... Right now I'm waiting for an answer from Mr Jcwolf, who's my last hope on here to help me find how to remove this annoying translucence.

I will not release it as long as I don't have an answer from Jc. BTW, if anybody has the solution, just give it on this thread, please !

I'd say just add more to the part you don't like...it looks more 3-D when you have inside debris.
As you can see the hole is not totally black. There is different luminocities of debris. This makes it more 3-d and not just flat black.

This is damage done to U.S.S. Cole from the boat attack:

Jimbuna 02-25-07 06:56 AM

I'd certainly be interested in seeing how the torpedo damage is coming along :yep:

JU_88 02-25-07 07:26 AM

Hmmm, with debris inside it looks 3d from the right angle, but form other angles it will look painted on. I reckon pitch black will look more convincing, just my 5 cents.

Alex 02-25-07 07:54 AM

That's a good idea, Tiki ;). That's what I did exactly, some weeks ago.
When I add more details on the black hole, the torpedo damage looks very good, yeah.... but on an other hand, the deck gun one have too much details on it, whereas it should have to look like a small black hole. See :

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/1204/dgao3.jpg

Moreover, about the last picture you've posted, Tiki, I don't think that it was possible to see as much the details through water using the external camera. ;)
So yeah, my actual goal for now is to make the most realistic damage for the deck gun, and for torpedo impact at the same time :arrgh!:.
