Additional time-line Radio Messages *Released*

Greetings;

I have been working on a time-line collection Radio message enhancement for Silent Hunter III. The additional messages liven up game play. I am wondering if there would be an interest to a release of this, as a messages_en.txt mod of sorts. But first, a little advise or help please.

Currently it has some 400 additional Radio messages that are historically accurate for late 1939 through early 1945. The better percentages (about 2/3) of the messages are related to events in the Atlantic & Mediterranean. The rest include some Pacific & supplemental messages. Recorded warships sunk by certain U-boats, Kriegsmarine & other war related events, other newsworthy events related to the war.

Messages are broadcasted around 1600; days with multiple messages are split up by hours give or take. I figure that’s ok.

I followed the stock format;

From: Naval High Command
To: German forces at sea
(Message)
Bdu.

The format is plain, figured that’s ok to because these are general messages, unless there are better formats. Also a lot of the messages include a date, some don’t. At first I thought this be good to break it up, now I’m not so sure.

Go for it

I don't really have any advice as far as format ( someone will ), but i like the idea, this would be a nice addition:up: Keep at it.

Edit: This is not directly related, but you may be interested in it. Similar concept as far a livening the game up a bit.

I think if you put a date on the messages it might not coincide with dates the player has picked.
But I like the idea of new messages

In the format the game uses the messages are sent in line with the game time
They already have the date on them anyway

That link is for a different type of text editing to alter or rotate in-game msg's from your WO, CE etc. Requires Commander for the file but It does work great!

The jazz I'm working on is for broadcasted radio Messages "M" when received.

Well this is a time-line so if you start a carrer early (starting) war you will see what messages are sent for the days & time played, and so on when available. If your carrer is say in late `40 then what messages were for earlier dates would't be sent at all.

Progress report; additional (Atlantic / Med.) supplimental messages added, now totaling 445+ time-line radio messages. When I'm done I estimate there should be just over 475.

Yeah, it was just an FYI, like what you are doing here:up:

Do I understand you right.
At 1600 hrs each day there will be a radio message from BDU? The idea is to surface or be on the surface at this time and receive the message?
If so, this sounds like a terrific idea.

Would be great if you could give the messages to German and French members for translation into their language.

Great, looking forward to it:up:

Progress report; Body of the messages are done! Total for this release is 483.
For the most part I'd say it's ready to go, I'd like to finish up the read-me file, and get some opinions on the format before I zip/rar it up.
Here's a few examples of the messages. They are in the current (stock) format:
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/01_16_t.jpg http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/1_59_t.jpg
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/13_296_t.jpg http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/23_35_t.jpg
Please check the next post for a few examples of alternates.
The first example is stock, and the next are just different ways to present the message body.

danurve 02-22-07 03:10 PM

The following are a few exammples of how radio messages can be presented. I might mix it up a little bit.
I don't want to open a can of worms but I'm realy looking for opinions - suggestions on what looks better. (these message examples will not be in the release)
1 Stock - plain format.
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_14_t.jpg
2 Stock format with extra spaces.
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_15_t.jpg
3 Message directed to your u-boat.
(this would need to be limited because most messages are general information)
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_16_t.jpg
4 Message including date sent/broadcasted)
Yes I know it shows the u-boat # but that could easily be changed to "German forces at sea" or some jazz.
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_17_t.jpg
Opionins - suggestions?

Number 4 is the best I think. Would be great if the messages could be translated into German, don't you think?

danurve 02-23-07 12:06 PM

Something such as this perhaps;

http://www.huntny.us/sh3/2_22_x/6_468_t.jpg

I like it actually.

About the translations; I agree it would be nice to have.
Here's the problem. I tried a few lines using http://babelfish.altavista.com/
"German forces at sea" translated to "Deutsche Kräfte am Meer" - OK
"Deutsche Kräfte am Meer" translated back "German forces at the sea" - OK

"Naval High Command" translated to "Hoher Marinebefehl" - ?
"Hoher Marinebefehl" translated back "High naval instruction" - Not ok

Just for kicks I translated a few message sentances and got back lots of inaccuracy. I can't imagine if I used that translator what the messages might then be actually be saying in German. Or the time it would take to verify etc.

So, I don't see doing the translation at this time. Unless I find better tools to use for accuracy, and the extra time to process multiple sentances and each preface.

Hehe, I'm a German so you could give me all the lines and I translate them (or I'll try;)). Perhaps some fellow German subsimers would like to help me?!

CptGrayWolf 02-23-07 01:48 PM

yesssss!!! More radio messages! more more more!
I think it was irishred that had that radiolog mod, but for some reason I think he stoped at 1943.

Sailor Steve 02-23-07 06:32 PM

I do have one disagreement with all the formats, though I could very well be wrong:

Wouldn't a message from "Naval High Command", be from OKM (Offizier der KriegsMarine), so messages would not be signed "BDU"? Also, if the message is from BDU, why would they sign it again at the bottom?

Just wondering.

OKM would be the German abbreviation for "Naval High Command". By 1943 Dönitz was the CIC of the German Navy, so I guess that the messages could be signed with BdU or better "Dönitz". Just to show I'm smart @ss: OKM doesn't mean "Offizier der Kriegsmarine" but "Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine".:smug::know:
