U-Boat WW2 losses in Google Earth
You might not have seen this before, if you have Google Earth it is well worth checking out - the locations of WW2 u-boat final resting places. Quite sad to view, so many losses.
The post to download the KMZ file is here; http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php?Number=794775 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6.../uboatloss.jpg |
jesus christ...more than quite a few id say lol. i notice the concentration of losses seems to be heavier in the famous der kanal
|
I think I read somewhere that the average U-Boat career on the front-line was 6 months, I think this was in Iron Coffins.
|
so are these losses just for Germany or all countries involved in the war?
|
There are much more U-Boats sunk in the Canal, the Biskay and the ports than in open sea:o War was really difficult for the U-Bootwaffe
|
75% (30,000 out of a total compliment of 40,000) war losses :yep: Need one say anymore :nope:

I think the estemated life time of an U-Boat officer was the same as the expected life time on an inexperienced officer at the east front: ~3 weeks.

We should go back in time and tell the Kaleun's...
STAY OUT OF THE CHANNEL! Kiel looks like it go hit hard too. You can't really see it, but I'm sure around the Gib was bad too. |

But at the risk of being shot down in flames IMO the two Clay Blair volumes 'Hitler's U-boat War in the Atlantic'. At work right now but I'm sure a few folk will come in with links for you  |
Thanks Jimbuna, I will add that one to the list:up: Back to work now:damn:

Thats all German warship losses on there not just Uboats
Heres one for the US http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/download.php?Number=134037 |
What would be interesting in that it would give us a clear progression of the war, would be to have different colour-coded markings indicating which year the sinkings took place in...Then you could really see how much smaller the "safe" hunting grounds got every year, and how quickly the losses started to pile up.

Heres one supposed to be a WW1 uboat
