98 vs xp
when i was on win98 this game ran fine but not on xp. it lags big time?????
|
XP certainly uses more ram, that is prob one issue
|
What are the computer specs you are working with? I have no issues with XP and the game.
|
RAM is certainly a possibility. I recommend a GB for this game. You could also be experiencing driver issues too. Some (most) of XP display drivers aren't the best for 3d applications.
I use XP and SH3 runs great. As mentioned before, if you can list your comp specs we may be able to help you out. Cheers! |
1GB RAM is good for game + XP....2GB or more could be deemed 'ideal' :yep:
|
Agreed. 2 GB really helped my load times. And most everything caches into RAM while in game.
|
I used to have 512MB of RAM and the game was fine on my laptop. It was a bit slow in the loading screens and lagged in the battle sceens with loads of graphics (explosions, huge fires etc). With 2GB now it runs really smooth.

2GB really is the sweet spot for WinXP in general. |

W/ Pro as high as you want w/ of course the limits to your MB specs.
I could be wrong on this. This is quoted from Microshaft site:" 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)" The above is for Pro and Home. |

personally I use 1gb of ram, machine still slow but I've got a cheap Motherboard. |
Yup, Silent Hunter 3 only runs in W2K, XP and...debately...Vista. And for XP, 2GB is the 'sweet spot'. Having over 2GB of RAM in XP (32bit, Home or Pro) is for the most part useless, since pretty much all programs are compiled to run within a 2GB address space, thus making anything over 2GB useless. In fact, I cant think of any games offhand that will use anything over the 2GB memory address.
Possibly the best use of memory over 2GB is as a RAM drive....my laptop has 3GB RAM in it, I configure 1GB as a RAM drive (leaving XP with 2GB RAM), and install parts of the game into this RAMdrive. This has the effect of greatly speeding up load times, but makes very little difference in performance once in the game (ie: my GWX campaign savegames load in approx 30 secs). |
