Snow and ice?

Hey peeps

Will we be getting new graphic effects for Snow and Ice around Alaska area?
I assume some patrols will take the course around Alaska so i was thinking it would be nice to have blizzards etc :p

Torplexed 02-11-07 02:12 PM

Haven't heard if ice and snow will be modeled. I know SH3 only had the occasional berg. However, everything I've read about patrolling in that area makes it sound like miserable and boring duty. Targets were rare and the environment was more dangerous than the enemy. (Maps of the area were rather incomplete so a lot of boats ran aground) Kind of like the Arctic patrols for the U-Boats. Think I"ll forsake the Aleutians Islands for sunnier climes. :sunny:

Translation: Better chance for bikini sightings in southern latitudes. ;)

Wonderful drawing. Just curious, did you already have this in your portfolio, or did you just draw this recently? As usual, most impressive work!

lol that is good

Anyway... back on topic

I recon a good Snow effect would really add some interesting gameplay assuming we were sent to patrol up north :p

Still only time will tell.....

That would make a nice tatooe, Torplexed ...
You could pick up a few extra dollars doing that one,
especially in the Seattle area ... lol

Didn't Glen Ford make a submarine movie that took place
in the Aleutians Islands?

Torplexed 02-11-07 05:54 PM

Tatoos creep me out..those needles.

Here's a nice atmospheric pic of the S-boat S-47 returning from a Aleutian patrol. Bad enough that you gotta spend weeks in a tossing wet, cold hull to then find out your R&R is in deary fogbound Dutch Harbor.

Great pic.

Gotta be resourceful: The Dutch make good beer, so all you need to do is find a friendly local Dutch lass to share it with. That'll help pass the time. ;)

Uhhh.... THAT Dutch Harbor lacks a lot, including Dutchmen, Dutch beer...and even a decent anchorage... 'Been there, done that...'

According to the caption, it's an Alaskan port.

Parker: CO, we have reached Europe and are ready to disembark.
CO: Splendid, Parker.
Officer crossing gangplank to sub: Welcome to Alaska, comrades. Did you have a decent patrol?
CO: ... I... Wha--... PARKEEEEEERRRRGROWL:damn:!

Somthing has happened to your picture torplexed, the girly has gone.

Dutch Harbor is an island 'port' about third of the way out on the Aleutian Island chain, that extends to the SouthWest from the main body of the State of Alaska. It is a very barren chain of islands. Dutch Harbor is near the main North/South passage between the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea to the North. Primarily a somewhat protected 'bay' in which Crab Processing Ships anchor. The most memorable thing about the Aleutians is that there is a beautiful, willing girl behind every tree....

An interesting bit of trivia is the Dutch Harbor is the only other land in North America that was bombed by the Japanese during WWII, besides Pearl Harbor of course.

Chief of the Boat 02-13-07 06:06 PM

Don't forget Attu [tip of the chain] was occupied by the Japs until we landed and after a pretty bloody fight, ran them out. Kiska and Amchitka were also bombed by the Japanese. Suggestion : 'The Thousand Mile War'... by Bob Reeve [founder of Reeve Aleution Airways]. I have a grave marker flag from Attu.
