I personally hate TigerDirect but that monitor looks good, albeit from a brand I've never heard of.

elite_hunter_sh3 01-02-07 03:45 PM

does anyone here have a widescreen LCD monitor the brand is by hanns -g it was bought out by hanns g and now hanns g makes I-INC monitors , does the picture stretch?

AVGWarhawk 01-02-07 03:56 PM

I have seen this stretching crap. The bag arse TV's that are longer than tall do the same thing. It is stupid. The prices you pay for this elongated TV and the picture looks elongated. Makes no sense to me. Go for the square monitor and be happy in my view!

elite_hunter_sh3 01-02-07 03:58 PM

so the picture stretches. is there a fix for it? can someone modify the dll for screen res so its the widescreen res??

Swany6mm 01-02-07 04:05 PM

Yes, I run a widescreen on my laptop. Dell's 17 Ultra Wide. It's outstanding! I run at 1920x1200, both desktop and in game. The fix is using the direct display edit. You can find the link on the wiki community manual (here's the direct link)

http://www.communitymanuals.com/shii...lay_Resolution

Make sure you follow the instructions ALL the way through. The first time I was in a hurry and just did the first part, not bothering to read the whole thing (you need to do more if you are running XP) and of course it didn't work until I went back and re-read.

The start up screens and menus are still in their native resolution, but as soon as the game loads it will load in what ever resolution you define in the CFG file.

There is a lot more to it than just that. I happen to have a widescreen tv and also hate the stretched look. A good WS tv will allow you to set the modes. If my TV see's a widescreen mode, it will switch to that mode. How ever, if it see's a regular tv signal, it will square itself. Has the same effect as watching WS on regular with the black bars, except I end up with black bars on the sides instead of top and bottom ;) Looks like a regular tv just with a MUCH better picture. Works quite well actually. Now, some TV's wont auto switch, but they'll at least have a manual switch.

Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread, just hate seeing something bashed when it's just not being understood. Not jumping out at you AVGWarhawk, only trying to clarify :)

Ciao

I have a widescreen LCD and my pic looks fine to me. I've talked about this b4. I really think it depends on the monitor and what kind of adjustments you can make with it, because I don't notice any stretching after I've changed the monitors scale settings.

elite_hunter_sh3 01-02-07 04:29 PM

lucky me i found a even better monitor for a better price

I have actually tried to play it on a 42 in plasma tv but it just pixals are playing up so I think my Nvida 660,256MB card is not good enough

nightdagger 01-02-07 09:30 PM

6600's suck but they should play it alright on a 42 inch tv, even at 1080p HD for SH3.

MONOLITH 01-02-07 10:24 PM

I play SH3 on a 21" widescreen, with the high res fix mod set at 1680x1050.

There's no stretch. Everything looks beautiful.

And after gaming in big widescreen, I'll never go back to a square monitor.

do you get a wider field of view as part of the deal? At the moment if I took a screenie of my bridge facing bearing 0 deg on a VIIC, i can see about half of the Watch Officer on my left and just the arm of the lookout on my right.

What do you get to see? In other words is it really worth it or not?

Do the math, wide screen = fewer pixels for the money. I have two Sony CRTs sitting next to two NEC non widescreen LCDs. Don't buy cheap monitors if you intend to sit in front of them much. Don't forget the video card either. If you planing to use the vga output, now may not be the time to upgrade the monitor. I game on the CRTs and program on the LCDs. That may have more do to with the computers than the monitors but if you use two you'll never go back:)

If Microsoft Flight Sim can run on two (or more) monitors why not SH? Sub Command is supposed to run on two but I haven't tried it yet.

No, the displayed image 'contents' is the same, I think (unlike widescreen movie versions).

But there's something about it that just looks and feels so much better.

Look at my sig, with it's rectangular shape. Now try to picture it with the sides squished into a square. it just wouldn't be as nice.

Any chance of posting a "widescreen" screenie?

Looking for a new monitor here as well and plan on puchasing one in February. In doing some research on this am finding that the older style CRT's are still better for the average gamer than the LCD's but of course the big PRO for an LCD is its lack of desk space, lack of power req. and apparently they only give off like 10% of the heat a CRT does. I like to run things in HIGH resoloution and am finding that an LCD that suits my tastes there is VERY expensive as opposed to a CRT which hits those rates with ease for less than half of the cost.

But the CRT is huge, one I'm looking at weighs 47 lbs!! but can run like 2100x1400 whereas a comparably priced LCD can only run 1280x1024 and its recommended to run it lower than that.

Just my 2 cents, of course the wife is screaming for me to get an LCD!

Yes, you get a wider field of view. Just not a lot. Widescreens tend to be better just because most widescreens have a better looking picture (so long as you spend a little to get a good monitor)
