Type II
I just started a carreer in a IIa, and I plan to, after upgrading to the IId, to keep this type my whole carreer. Will I be able to get proper upgrades later in the war like snorkel and the like? Also, does anybody have experience with the late war Type II scenario? Im planning to use it as a North sea/harbour Raider.
thanks in advance :smug: |
You better be a crack shot with your torpedoes if you using manual targeting, cos you only have 5, and no deck gun to mop up!!:damn:
Nice little boat though, slow, but nice. Would be good for raiding ports, shallow draft etc.:arrgh!: Dunno about the schnorkel, sorry. I would say most of the AA upgrades are out too, because you have no space for the wintergarten.:hmm: Go to the ship upgrade screen and click the button in the bottom right/left corner, it shows you the tech tree, you can see what your boat can and cant get there.:know: |

Think you'll be transferred to a type VII sometime in 1940 as the II-types is now for training purposes only? In IIA here too, btw. Running out of both fuel and torpedoes pretty quick... but like it being a beginner. |
it used to have 5 torps?? 3 tubes and 2 reloads??When did that change?
or am i going mad. Your machine gun is no real use, especially not for port raids. |
GW changed it to six. Some sources say six (including AOD); most say five.

IMO you will seriously limit any chances of glory/advancement in a type II :yep:
Go for the type IX and visit far off places like NY. South America. the Caribbean etc. |
5 or 6 torps
It was possible for the Type II to carry a 6th torpedo but it was really in the way of the crew. So, I understand that normally most Type II's only carried the 5 torpedos. At least that's what I have read.

Well, to give you a complete background on the II version A:
Displacement: 255 tons when surfaced & 305 tons when submerged Length: 41 meters Beam: 4 meters Draft: 4 meters Max Speed: *14 knots when surfaced & *7 knots when submerged Endurance: 1,050 nm (12 knots when surfaced) & 35 nm (4 knots when submerged) Depth: *100 meters at operational & *150 meters at maximum depth Dive Time: About 30-35 seconds Torpedoes: Bow: 3 Stern: 0 Reloads time: 3 Other Weapons: One 20 millimeter machine gun (flak/strafer for boats) MY THOUGHTS IN CONTEXT TO YOURS: The II-A is a lower mediocre at best for usage towards raids in harbors and attacks on smaller merchant vessels. There are more downsides, however. The maximum safe depth is fairly dangerous when one must seek shelter from depth charge attacks. With stern shots impossible, defense must ALWAYS come from the front. The 20 MM machine gun is a "meh" when it comes to defense against aircraft. Crew is also a major problem. It's size makes it pretty bad when it comes to crew conditions. Morale can quickly break since it is cramped. If a crewman is killed or wounded, EVEN 1, you have a problem: your difficulty in managing your ship is increased. Lose six or more and it's only a matter of time before you will be unable to operate the U-boat. Flooding is also a very serious issue. Severe flooding is fatal in these small craft. You WILL eventually begin to sink deeper and deeper, and it will then be only a matter of minutes before you are brought to critical depth and your U-boat begins to creak and crack. Soon, maybe about 200-230 meters, you will take more and more damage before you are crushed by the pressure and sealed in your tomb. CLOSING THOUGHTS: Take the II-D: dives faster, and has a greater depth it can sustain before taking damage. Goes faster underwater, too. Also, it reloads faster. |
You'll crush at MUCH shallower than 200 meters. Trust me, I've tried it. :88)

Aww dont throw rocks at the IIA. It is still fun to go to war with. Sure later in the war it is severely outmatched but then again it was not designed for that. To be honest later in the war everything we have is outmatched. (At least I hear that, never lived long enough to see it for myself LOL).
I always thought of it as a coastal vessel that got pushed to sea because the war happened before the force was ready for it. Chuck |
As for speed and agility, I cant think of another boat I would rather be in when the depth charges start raining down. Sprint and drift.

Pretty much ideal for harbours and quite safe when depth charged. Veru vunerable when surfaced. But don't go too deep. IIRC its 125 m. max depth. In one of my careers I kept the IID for 16 missions. In GWX (Grey Wolves Expansion) you will have the chance to play a career in the Black Sea and sink some Russian tonnage, for a change. |
What is different in sinking russian ships ?

The high vodka content makes for some spectacular flames.:yep:
**edit** - oh crap, now i'm a navy dude. |

I think the "advantage" that a type II can really gives you are
1. agility ~ A small boat vs Depth charges 2. Smaller size ~ smaller contact on enemy radar Have a nice day! Switch to type IX or VII if you cannot cope with it |

after cutting my teeth i did earn enough renown to get me a type VIIA but i always missed my type II's they have a special place for me. i'm one of those off people who like the u-boats in the med add on (i bought it before i discovered NYGM) and using the type II's in the med is a hell of a lot of fun. not too far to run around and its pretty target rich, you've got to be sneaky sneaky though. got to say the ability to change depth so fast in the type II's has saved my bacon so much depth charges dropping shallow or deep and me skipping out their way. class. pete |
Thanx for the replies all. Ill stick with the IId until the IXc is available.

Something to bear in mind is that the Type-II boats are given different patrol grids to the Type-IXs. You can get to the east coast of England and back a lot faster than the east coast of the USA. Thus you end up completing a lot more patrols in the course of the war. If you like to do one patrol per evening, with limited time, then this might suit you better. Fewer torpedoes might make the missions more challenging and thus exciting. Sort of comes down to playing style, that's all.
