256x and Air Attacks

What is the issue with air attacks and high time compression?

I'm getting to the point where airpower is going to be a factor, and don't want to lose my boat over it if I can avoid it. :)

TGW 1.1a is the version I am playing, if it matters.

Safe-Keeper 11-14-06 04:29 PM

High time-compression equals no air attacks, sadly. So in areas patrolled by airplanes (such as the Bay of Biscay), keep time compression low.

AVGWarhawk 11-14-06 06:40 PM

Yeah, I was busy TC at the highest and noticed no airplanes ruining my day. Stabiz noted that TC does this in some other post. So to make like more interesting for me I TC around at 256. I finally got some Tiger Moths to swoop down and do their thing. This was 1939. I'm sure it will get worse. It makes for some slow moving but I also read in another thread that the watch will see more ships so there is a plus to the low TC.:hmm: What is funny is that some complained that the TC allowed DD or planes to kill you before you have time to react so it is a give and take situation.

Umm that's interesting. I thought if a ship or plane was spotted, TC went to 1.

I guess that instant destruction happens when the watch is asleep and doesn't see it coming?

I stand corrected....last time I drink scotch while posting:doh:

Ive had this problem using twg at 256. Ran into a convoy with out getting ship spotted notice. The only notice I got was that I was taking fire and damage.

Bernard on the bridge.....:nope:
Could be that your crew was exhausted. Did they get enough rest?

I've had my TC drop to 1 . . . and have about 20 actions occur simultaneously as it did . . . notably multiple hits from a suddenly-appearing destroyer, along with (when truly unlucky) being rammed. :dead:

I get the impression that Wijbrandus means (correct me if I'm wrong) that when TC is high game drops back to 1x, the crew says aircraft spotted, but you have already taken a lot of damage!:-? If so there is a Mod by Der Teddy Bar that fixes this, mine drops back to 1x now & often have time to dive without being spotted (If I'm quick - crash dive).

air

Reece,
I just got hit by air at tc 128 and was damaged immeditely. TC dropped to one but I already had been damaged when I hit the dive button. Sept 1939

Reece 11-30-06 06:36 AM

It's the one aspect of gameplay that always annoyed me, when using TC and enemy is detected it should drop back imediately, but with me it is always far too late, many times my boat is destroyed, a game fault!:nope: Der Teddy Bar has a fix in the latest NYGM Campaign but never released it as a separate mod, I asked for the relative parts to the mod & He sent them to me, If anyone wants the mod I could post it, I don't think Teddy would mind, however I had better PM him first for approval.:D
PS. Sorry if I'm hijacking thread!:smug:

I remember something about this online community of AOD and one of their 'realism rules' was to never go over x128 compression.
So that's what I've done ever since, sure it takes long to get places but real life patrolling was also very boring.
And from the game mechanic aspect, not going over x128 might get rid of many compression bugs.

You can set the "Air Enemy Detected" TC to zero (0) which will immediately pause the game. You then have time to think of your response before restarting the game.

The downside is it is a little aggrevating in harbor traffic every time a plane is spotted.

Enemy Air Detected should have been set to zero by default, not sure what the devs were thinking there...
btw where excatly do we make these changes? I know there are a few .ini files, including in My Documents.

Firebird 11-30-06 08:40 AM

You can do it with SH3 Commander. I wonder if that will be enough though, surely setting it to 0 instead of 1 won't make any difference if the change happens too late anyway...

von Zelda 11-30-06 12:45 PM

This is how you change "enemy air detect"

Go to My Documents Directory and find the SH3 folder. Open it and then double click on Data folder, then CFG folder and then find the Main.cfg file. Open it and you will see "Time Compresion" in the second section. Look for "enemy air detect" which is at 1 and change it to 0. Save and exit and it is done.

Remember, even though it says "enemy air detect," all planes including friendlies will pause the game. This is only a problem for me when navigating through harbor traffic at the beginning of a mission.

mookiemookie 11-30-06 12:54 PM

Setting the "airplane spotted" TC to 0 has saved me and my men more times than I can count. Even though it can be a pain while leaving port, the benefits outweigh that small annoyance by far. I highly recommend it.
