I am trying to skin the IX boats with a view to make them more realistic in terms of patrol length. This will include weathering and a suitable camo/colouring to depict a long time at sea.

Please ignore the water colour as it seems that I have nerf'd my scene dat which currently gives me Med water across the globe:doh:

As this is a WIP I have not started the conning towers yet. I need to know that I'm heading in the right direction.

I am looking for feedback regarding the boats colour and weathering effects.

Your opinion is required, please.

I think fubar better look out, he's got some good competition. Looks REALLY nice so far. I so wish i had the same artistic capablty. Unfortunatly as modding goes ive always been a logic sort of a guy, and not creative enough for work like this. Again looks awesome.

danlisa 11-05-06 01:32 PM

I thought that you might be first in Ducimus, I'm happy with it too. I shall continue with this IXB version first then show the completed boat before starting on the IXC & IXD2.

The only thing I'm not convinced about is the camo stripes, maybe I'll have a play with those.

GT182 11-05-06 01:39 PM

I agree... looks very nice.

If you can, please make them JSGME compatable. Much easier for us with the dreaded "intalling impaired" syndrome. Besides, it's much safer too for SHIII. ;)

melnibonian 11-05-06 01:56 PM

Wow it looks really nice. I'm looking forward to use it

Jimbuna 11-05-06 01:59 PM

Very nice dan  ....I take your point about the camo stripes :hmm: ....any plans for just 'grey/weathered' in future work ?

For an excellent reference on uboat painting , heres a link Jones gave in another thread if you havent D/L'ed it already:

Personally, i think Camo stripes in general, are to break up a ships outline, its silloutte. Its not like a boat can hide behind a bush and blend in with its surroundings. So the general purpose is to break up the ship's sillloute or otherwise make it hard to find a range or AOB on. The "dazzle" camoflauge from WW1 is an example of this.

The stock 9c skin, i think is a spin on this theme.

The purpose of the scheme, seems to be to present several false bow wave. I don't know if its historical or not.

As a comparision, heres a grey paint job, althoguh i must note that i didnt posiition the camera in the exact same position as the first screenshot so the breakup of the boats outline in the first picture will be exaggerated a little.

Now, having said all that. The reality is, whatever camo you put on a boat in SH3 isn't goign to fool anyone, so you could argubly take a little more artistic liberty with it.

Thanks for that PDF Ducimus, I'll read it while I continue work. Just had a quick scan and it looks to have a wealth of info regarding colours etc.

Thanks:rock:

Must say top top work yet again Danlisa:yep:
I look forward to your skins. As Ducimus says you really have a talent for this.:yep:

Update

Small update for you.

Here is a semi-finished IXB with Conning Tower 1. It's funny that the skins all look different depending on the sunlight conditions. This time we're in English waters.

From the Bridge:
Note - I'm going to revert the wood paneling back to default as it is too dark. I also need to find out where the texture is for the radio antenna is. Any ideas?

Now, does anyone know where the textures are for the guns on the deck. They are not governed by the textures in GUNS_SUB.DAT (UFlak_High.tga or Typ21_20mm_UFlak.tga)

Ducimus 11-05-06 04:25 PM

Radio annteinna is in "Conning_stuff.tga". Its in the both the sensors.dat and whatever conning tower you happen to be using. ALthough, the game seems to only take into account of the one in sensors.dat.

I could swear the The deck guns is "UFlak_High.tga" and its in the Guns_sub.dat.

ALthough it could be governed by conning_stuff.tga as its the only one your missing it seems.

btw, its looking really damn good. I particuarlly like the coloring on the UZO instead of the usual white color.

Didn't know that, Ta:up:

Yeah, I did re-texture those, however, they didn't take, maybe I screwed the re-pack. Will check.

stabiz 11-05-06 04:36 PM

Johooo! We now have another certified skinner! (Warms my heart, since I`m a skin-o-file)

Love it, dan.

PS: What about rust?

danlisa 11-05-06 04:42 PM

Techinally, there is rust there. As I have used the DAT's from my GW1.1a install, my skins have fubar's excellent work as a base.(under all of that somewhere)

However, I could add more rust.:hmm:

danlisa 11-05-06 04:57 PM

Guns are sorted.

FYI - Gun textures must be included in a texture folder. They will not enable just by re-packing the dat.
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/3...eather6nx2.jpg

Now then, 2 more conning towers & 2 more Hulls to go, then all done. Phew.

Note to self, must be finished with this by Wednesday.;)

Edit - I wonder if GWX has changed anything that might affect these skins:hmm: I hope not.

Jimbuna 11-05-06 05:12 PM

OMG :o ...bloody fantastic dan...you should be very pleased with this

_Seth_ 11-05-06 06:25 PM

danlisa, excellent work!!! You are truly good at this!!! But watch out: Im reading your skinning tutorial, and you will soon have some healthy competition (i hope....):rotfl:

Keep up the good work!!!!:up:

melnibonian 11-05-06 06:40 PM

This is FANTASTIC. Brilliant job.

Where can we download it????

GT182 11-05-06 06:43 PM

Again, very nice Dan. Especially the weathered look.

OT: Has anyone firured it out for the radio loop antenna to go up and down yet? Or even permanently up? Subs just look funny surfaced and no antenna showing. Besides, we shouldn't even be able to send radio messages without it in the up position.

Repacking the dat' its very finicky.Ive managed to repack the guns.dat. It might be worth nothing that I only use the chessmaster tool (datTexExtract.exe) ,and it yells at you when everythigns not perfect. It expects things at a certain color bit. Any transparency in the background of the TGA throws it off, it wont accept it. But anyway, having reduced the texture resolution to stock, and using a color bit it accepts, ive repacked it on my own drive and it seems to works fine. Its just REALLY DAMN PICKY ABOUT IT is all.

As an aside I highly doubt GWX will effect the usablity of your skins. Im 99.99999% sure that they wont. Infact, i'll bet if you showed the Lehmann those skins, you might be able to get them included in GWX's final release - they LOOK THAT GOOD! The worst case scenario is you might not be able to repack them into a dat of hex addresses have changed, thereby throwing dat packing tools off. But i HIGHLY doubt that. THe GW team has been repacking the dats to clear as many textures as they can out of the tex directory to improve the games performance.

Again, great job, im really loving what you've shown so far!
