Announced on Blu-ray.com late Tuesday Evening (3/29).

This is a release for North America, or whatever region includes the US?
Any mention of cool extras that we haven't seen before? Like I'm not gonna go look it up like RIGHT NOW. |

Edit: the ASIN is B004SUDQ4U, just search for that (using the Subsim link of course!). Just pre-ordered mine. I've seen a few comments online (maybe even here) from people who saw the European release who didn't think the quality was much improved on Blu Ray and doubted whether it was worth having. However I've never seen the original theatrical release and altho I probably won't like it as much, being used to the longer versions, this will no doubt be my one shot at actually owning a copy of it. Edit Redux: Oh and THANK YOU SCRAPSER for the heads up!! |
My next computer may include a Blu-Ray player, but I don't own a television, so I'm bummed because the extras look kind of nice.

One thing I'll be curious to know: In my VHS copy of the original theatrical release the water is actually blue, not green. I don't know how, where or why the change was made, but in all the underwater shots it's blue. What will it look like in this version? |

Or a copy of the full original German screenplay. Either/or would make me happy. :yep: |

Some of the translations are downright laughable. There is a scene early on in the film, just before the first practice "Alarm!!" drill where a crew member, probably the cook, is wending his way through the centrale and he's carrying a crate of eggs. In one subtitle version, he calls out "Eggs!" as a sort of "Make way" or "Watch Out" notice. In the uncut version, the subtitle says "Screws!!" I'm not versed in German, but I'm pretty sure the subtitle shouldn't say "Screws!!" :hmmm: |

Yay, another Das Boot thread - but unlike Obama threads, I can't get enough of them :DL
The only thing I find odd about the NA-release is that the English audio doesn't seem to be included - I think it's pretty cool that all the actors dubbed thir own voices - provides an authentic feeling with the German accents. Regarding the English subs: they are exactly the same as what they say in the English audio dub. I assume they changed the dialogue in some scenes to stay lip-sync. Quote:

I just watched the scene. He says "Warschau! Eier!" - "Watch out! Eggs!" - in my version this sentence is not subbed. Another odd thing that I noticed while looking for this scene: When our narrator gets the Tauchretter thrown at him, in the English version they say that it prevents him to smell Frenzen's feet, while in the original they talk about Frenzen's farts :D I don't want to smell neither off them... :O: Quote:

OTOH somebody would probably find that tedious and blame Obama for it. :haha: Quote:

But "Watch out! Screws!" ??? That makes no sense at all. Considering the secondary German usage of "Eier," maybe the subtitler just got his nuts and screws confused. :haha: |
Teal and orange.
Always with the friggin' teal and orange. :stare: :nope: :damn: http://i53.tinypic.com/2610lxc.jpg |

Subtitles are an iffy matter at best. I saw a Japanese film once with two sets of subtitles, one in English and the other in French. They took up almost the lower third of the frame. On top of this, the producers apparently went for cheap and hired university students to do the subtitles. The English subs read like a frat boy version of the dialog ("Chaps, His Lordship is really a bummer..."); the French subs were apparently done by a socialist ("Our decadent Lord is defying the will of the people..."). The film itself was just an ordinary samurai film and not at all political... :-? |

40000 German sailors voted for Obama during WW2, 30000...oh wait... :D First sentence (by the Kaleun): "Unser Bootsmann. Voll bis Oberkante Unterkiefer!" "Our bosun. Buzzed like a bilge rat!" (literally: full till the upper edge of the lower jar) Last sentence: "Aaaaaargghhh!" "ouch!" Coming next month: the second sentence! :O: Quote:

Nothing to do about the cover art, but my biggest fear about this upcoming release is that they'll overdo the Digital Noise Reduction to cut back on grain, and everyone will look like a wax sculpture. I plan on giving in and buying a blu-ray player tomorrow, but I'm aware that not all blu-ray discs are created equally.
Take this screenshot from The Longest Day, for example. Anything look not quite right to you folks? http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/1699/dnr.th.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us |

On this page http://forums.highdefdigest.com/blu-...ml#post2038523 if you scroll about 2/3 of the way down, someone posted screencaps from the European blu-ray release that came out last fall. One of the reviews I read somewhere else said that the "grain" was still there, no digital trickery in that respect, and in many respects it was an improvement on the Superbit DVD release. At any rate, we'll know in June. :yeah: |
