Is this worth buying

only you yourself can answer that question. There are as twice as many opinions as the users on this forum... and even more outside!

I am a simulator fan and don't need fancy graphics. Gameplay and complexity is more important to me. But the modded SH5 is breathtaking when you first launch. (I use Sober's megamod with subtle patches.) This can not be said about the vanilla game.

Buy the dvd , you can apply the unofficial patches . They dont work with steam version .

how can you even ask that of any game that costs less then a happy meal at mcdonalds? :o

Zzenith 09-14-12 08:43 AM

At the price you can get it now and the entertainment provided once modded of course its worth buying.

I just bought it and am now looking at the mod sections forums now.

Sabatasso 09-14-12 11:02 AM

When I first played SH5 my jaw dropped to the ground in disappointment... I actually threw the DVD in the bin, hoping to forget there ever was another SH after III. (I didn't throw away SH4, I just never bought it.)

So, what I'm asking here is quite simply if SH5 is anywhere near SH3 (GW3 etc) in immersion and playability now that there surely are a vast selection of finely tuned mods out there?

Graphics isn't really an issue, but I know how visually nice SH5 are, so if the gameplay has been modded to tolerable levels, it's a tempting switch for me, at least for diversity.

Anyone got a considered view on the issue at hand?

First post;

Hello, my name is not important. I am 33 years old and have been playing subsims since forever...

Buy it, try it, mod it, try it again. Like it or not you've then got your own opinion. It costs little these days.

My mind is already so negative towards the game that I need a positive feedback to even bother buying and installing it again. Basically what I am asking is "does it still suck, or is there a redemption through mods that makes it worthwhile at all?".

Misunderstand me correctly, I have nothing against Ubisoft, but to be fair, they haven't actually outdone themselves with the Silent Hunter series lately, not to mention how pathetically they effed up with the online anti piracy project that failed so miserably that they almost deserve bankruptcy, interpret that as you please... and not to instigate a huge discussion, but they've more or less destroyed Assassin's Creed from a "mature gamers" point of view... my point is that they've been more or less console oriented (instant action -> fcuk quality) minded lately (last five years or so...). Before you pass judgment, I've played and enjoyed many Ubisoft games, even the Assassins Creed games, but if you look at the evolution of that once great game, it becomes more of a "no effort graphic novel" than an actual game. (having said that, the new AC game look amazing if they refrain from scripting every major encounter to death... hard to say from the vids tbh...)

/rant off...

EDIT: (/rant on... :D )
I am after immersion and realism over flashy graphics and cool explosions and pathetic epic tales... I am after what "escapist artist" called Dark souls. "a waste of time, but you don't realize it because it's so great".

I want a game that is so good that it doesn't really need a tailored story to go with it. Much like SH3 with GW (of course...) if you get what I mean.

PS. I'm sorry if I'm ranting, but I am drunk and I've just been at a Joe Lynn Turner concert, and against all odds it was effin amazing. If I'm not making any sense right now, blame it on the rock n' roll... I'll specify tomorrow

While I am at it... listen and enjoy this great piece of music;

What I basically mean is that I anticipated such a response and I wanted someone passionate about the game to point out the positives (including mods) that I have not yet experienced (in the game in question), and to be honest I had not expected this game to ever be playable at all due to its pathetic state on release. I am basically giving it a minor second chance, but I'm not willing to support Ubisoft economically without any form of reflected feedback. I've bought the game once, and I am not to do the same mistake again without any form of half-unbiased reflection about the positives (which were few and far between upon release) about the game.

So... (you might call me an ass) but I want (potentially) you to "sell" me the game a second time... make it worthwhile over a product that already has passed the test of time (SH3 with GW ++) (again, misunderstand me correctly, I am merely trying to express myself in a foreign language)

I am not expecting you, or anyone, to "sell" me the game, I merely give a willing soul the opportunity to give me the heads up on the selling points of the game, if there are any valid ones...

Like I said, not expecting anything, just hoping... giving anyone the opportunity to recruit another sucker.

Well that's confusing - do you want someone to 'sell' the game, or not? :hmm2:

Sober, TDW, Trevally, et al*, have each worked their butts off to get this game to a more playable state - and I believe, by and large, that they have succeeded, but still they toil further to give us the game it should've been.

All there effort, you should try it for sure. :yep:

Finally, we are a family friendly forum, you may wish to remove the swearing - in whatever guise it may be - before a passing mod notices.

THE_MASK 09-14-12 08:20 PM

I think i would have spent at least half an hour testing all my mods over the last couple of years . If you have the dvd and install the correct mods then the game is enjoyable .

GT182 09-14-12 09:19 PM

Game play is not the same as SH3. It's different in that BDU gives you objectives to complete. And it can be a daunting experience to say the least. With the right mods it will look great and will also keep you on your toes. ;)

The TDC is nowhere the same as in SHII unless you use TheDarkWarith's TDC UIs. If you don't use his then do practice in the single Historical missions before you start your campaign.

Good luck Captain. :salute:

Trevally. 09-15-12 03:19 AM

Every now and then people breeze in here and rant-
"This game is rubbish"
"I'm going to throw it in the bin"
"Convince me to try your mods".

No, throw it in the bin - your loss:arrgh!:

THE_MASK 09-15-12 04:38 AM

Spend the 5 bucks on a couple of cheese burgers . At least you know you already hate it .

JacqueShredo 09-15-12 05:06 AM

It's a great game because of this very forum

If you take your time with it and patch and mod it to your taste the game is truly great
