[REL] Tougher Aircraft

EDIT: If you are using this mod please leave comments regarding it's effectivness.
I am considering this a WIP and will continue to work on it.

Tougher Aircraft (1.2 compatible)
----------------
April-13-07

Made possible by timetravaller & nvdrifter

(This mod is compatible with SH4 v1.1)

>>>>>Install with JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler<<<<<

I haven't seen this as a stand alone mod, so here
it is for those who want to use it.

The purpose of this mod is to increase the toughness
of enemy aircraft, in vanilla SH4 my AA gunners can
usually drop an enemy plane on it's first pass.
They are just to easy to put down.
Rather than nerf the guns I elected to increase the
planes HP. It has been doubled, this of course makes
the planes much harder to put in the drink, at the
very least it takes longer.
Works very well for me.

I have also included my own version of a modified
airstrike.cfg & contacts.cfg, If you don't like or
want to use them simply delete the mods Cfg folder
before installing.

Location of affected files
--------------------------

\Data\Air\*.zon

\Data\Cfg\airstrike.cfg & contacts.cfg

This mod "will" conflict with any mod that alters the same files.

No zones.cfg?

shad43 04-13-07 07:59 PM

Yeah I looked at that, lots O settings...tweaking the zon files alone seemed to have a good effect.

If you add them up zones shows different hp totals than the zon files do?
I was worried that tweaking one without the other might have no effect but it seems to work for me. (I'll let the community help me beta test it)

Basically every ship, or plane is made up of different individual building blocks if you will, or "zones". Engineroom, cargo hold, wing, cockpit, etc. The hitpoints for the planes components aren't supposed to be any singular sum, but just individual pieces of it. (locational damage if you will) By adjusting the hitpoints on these pieces you can dictate how easy or hard a component on a ship or plane is to destroy, and/or add some really cool special effects. You can even effect how fast or slow ships sink, or how much boyancy a ship compartment gives. Overall a pretty powerful file, do give it a look

Thanks for the tip Ducimus :D I'll check into it further...been looking at so
many different things, modding can be addicting :o

Hehhe tell me about it. The zones file will be pretty hard to understand without something to compare it to, id d/l some of the SH3 mods that deal with that file and compare them to a stock sh4 zones.cfg. Only reason i mentioned it to begin with was, i was it just struck me odd that one wasnt included, they usually are. It really depends on what you want to accomplish though.

If our purposes of planes not dying so fast, then upping their hitpoints is probably enough. If you wanted to delve more into "subs didnt shoot down alot of aircraft" type of mod, then you could jack the HPs way up, so the only way to shoot down an aircraft would be to destroy a critical component, which is alot harder to do comparitvley.

This MOD would bring a lot of respect back into the game for enemy aircraft. In real life no submarine crew made a sport of shooting down a plane if they had the time to safely dodge it.

I'm not sure how tough Jap planes were. A USA B17 could take a massive amount of damage and still fight.

Camaero 04-14-07 02:09 AM

Most jap planes had no self sealing fuel tanks and would light on fire quite easily.

Just curious, at what point would a US sub engage a E/A on the surface? If they spotted one coming straight towards them, would they dive or take evasive actions and man the AA guns?

shad43 04-14-07 01:30 PM

I agree with both of the posts above...in all my reading US Subs only engaged an aircraft as a last resort.

My Father In Law was a Marine Raider during the war, at one point he was wounded
and spent a few months aboard a hospital ship, after being cleared for duty his unit was some distance away so until they caught up he was assigned to AA duty on a
20mm cannon, he had occasion to fire at several Jap planes (yes they did attack hospital ships, bastiges) he even downed two Zeke's, he exploded one at close range
with a short burst from the gun and the other he hit many times before it finaly crashed into the water not more than a few yards from the ship, riddled with holes.

Obviously it depends where the plane is hit on how quickly it will be destroyed.

In game terms it's just to easy, maybe the guns are to powerful, but I decided that just upping the hp of the planes would help.

This mod may not even work as well as I intended - they may well still be to easy to down, but it's a start.

As a side note "Pop" as we call him was once deployed from a Gato class sub, he can't remember the subs number unfortunatly.

Cheers :D

Zero aircraft donīt have any armor plate and not sealing fuel tanks , they have a very good maneuvering and climbing rates but more vulnerable to gunfire than american fighters

New here. just wanted to add that while I`m always glad to take down an attacking enemy plane it does indeed appear too easy to shoot them down. I used to always instantly dive in fear when one appears, but after my first couple of easy shot downs I don`t even worry about it. They often don`t survive the first pass. This can`t be right.

I always had the impression that every submariner dived first, fought later. japanese planes were fragile compared to Allied planes, but even with an F4F shooting them it took close range 150m or less of fire into a zero or bomber to break it up, set it alight.

A sub is not a fighter shooting from 150 metres. such shoot downs should be much rarer. When an aircraft is that close to a sub it`s only for a fraction of the time as it passes by.

Thanks for the mod. Hope it does the trick.

Does anyone have a copy of this mod available. I am specifically interested in the aircraft.zon files.

Thanks in advance,

Akbar

AkbarGulag,

I uploaded the file to filefront for you. Here is the link:

http://files.filefront.com/Tougher+A.../fileinfo.html

It is the complete file by shad43.

DrBeast 03-26-08 10:06 AM

Do keep in mind, upping the Hit Points in each aircraft's .zon file might not be enough to make them tougher. You might have to check some of their shared zones' hit points and Armor Rating in zones.cfg. Dunno if that's been done in this mod or not (haven't downloaded to check...I'm lazy like that sometimes! ;))
