Yes indeed the game engine shader is pretty basic but i have some trick that i used in the 3d program to fake some part of a more advanced shader.

CTRL + M.Wheel - it's for smooth zoom from 1x (min)... to 10x (max), default values...

it works perfectly to sh3 too (i am,currently, using it). just drop the camera.cam in your library folder and that is all ....no need to do anything else !
by default it has three zoom levels x1/x10/x20 but all these can be adjusted to your 'zoom' tastes through s3d

1) It's SH3, not SH4... different work of the same commands...
2) For the first part...
You proposed the same thing ... only with other parameters and Optical controller is placed in separate file *. cam...
3) For the second part...
My editing of the Command_xx.cfg file, provides the smooth zooming from MinZoom to MaxZoom in SH3...
