Kennedy's PT-109 in the Blackett Strait...8/2/1943; giving rise to JFK's Navy Cross award. "after interviewing many of the crew, one author concluded that it was not an accident, and he talked to the man at the wheel who was ordered to steer for a collision course. Amagiri also engaged other PT boats in the Blackett Strait south of Kolombangara. LT. COM. Kohei Hanami — who commanded Amagiri at that time — attended President Kennedy's inauguration in 1961. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...agiri_1930.jpg

Sword Beach was her assigned area; she was given the primary task of silencing the Berneville battery. The ship began by opening fire on the 6" german battery out four of the six guns in the first 80 minutes and keeping the attention of the rest, allowing landing craft to proceed unmolested. By evening she had accounted for the other two guns.

In the course of her entire Normandy engagement, she fired 1,002 15-inch (381 mm) shells, thought to be the greatest bombardment by any single ship up to that time.
