Boy returned home from the Phillipines yesterday and was thoughtful enough to bring his old man a bottle of the local fooch.

It is actually very nice.

Brakspear's 'Oxford Gold'

4.6% ABV and only £1.19 at LIDL Stores. It is astonishingly like the 'Golden Crown' I mentioned before (see link below)... that beer has turned out to be the one I want to drink every weekend, with its resinous, bitter tang. In fact I thought I would never want anything else until we had to do our shop at LIDL today and Moira got this instead. It is a golden colour, like the other one, but has an even more powerfully bitter taste and is a little stronger.

^ Only ever seen that at Sainsbury's and yet to try it.

Pray tell.

Really bitter... lovely on its own. The price is amazing when you think you can pay over two quid for a beer at Tesco.

Again only £1.19 at LIDL. Another strong golden ale, 5% ABV this time, but sweeter and less resinous than the last one... fabulous value.

Will be off to LIDL with the wife this afternoon actually so radar will be switched on. Off to Tesco now but I seldom get past the dark rum section :)

Not long back from Lidl and not a sight of any of the above :hmmm:

That's a shame... ours is a brand new store only opened 3 weeks ago, so maybe that's got something to do with it: get people flocking in there for great prices and items which will turn out just to be short-lived.

Quite possibly but we have two in town and one recently reopened two month ago after having been demolished to make way for a completely new and larger rebuild.

I'll try the older and smaller store tomorrow me thinks.

Brakspear is actually a Wychwood product and although I can't find it in LIDL's beers list above, I know it's on sale in the Boston store :)

No luck at the other/smaller store so it's looking like Carling and Captain Morgan tonight.

That is what I brought back from George Bush International Airport when I attended the SubSim Texas Meet, not forgetting a bottle of this little beauty below that Tarjak/Grant brought over for me from Australia.

Scarborough Fair IPA

(From Wold Top Yorkshire Brewery, £1.83 from ASDA, 6% ABV)...fresh, crisp amber beer with a pure white head; bitter and sweet, but more sweet than bitter, this is a refreshing drinking ale and not at all cloying... I'll certainly be drinking more of this one.

My son recently had a friend of his from the Phillipines stay with him for six weeks and we were informed he preferred dark beer to lager, so I purchased a few crates of Black Sheep for our weekly Monday evening familly dinner meets.
He's gone back home now and I realised I still had a few bottles left, no problem, they tasted great and this has re-ignited my 'addiction' temporarily away from the usual lagers.

I'm going to Tesco shortly and had a look online for who is currently the cheapest dark rum provider when I come across the sister beer to Black Sheep I hadn't seen before, Golsden Sheep, at 4.7% it is slightly stronger than Black Sheeps 4.4% so I'll give it a try this evening.

Not badly priced either at £6 for 4x500ml bottles.
